To give a short view of how I see the game and start a proper discussion on this interesting topic (balance of the game).

There is 2 pools of characters, first one is containing really good characters (around 8 of them), second pool is about more situational or bad characters. Players are banning 4 of the first pool (in expert mode), leaving 2 to pick to each player. Then players needs to choose 2 out of the 8 in the second pool to perfect their synergies and strategies. If you accept that you have always to play the characters from the first pool in order to have a competitive team against another player being good at the game (and so doing the same), the game is pretty well balanced.

If you would like to play whatever characters and have a chance to win, then competitive gaming is maybe not for you on this game. That's definitively not the purpose of the game, since it focuses on team up, so there will always be some more competitive teams compare to others.
