Tiebreaker for Arena Points?

Post by ResonanceSM »

How does Arena decide who's in first when people have the same # of points? Are there fractional points?

There are fractional points, as there is for regular elo.

They seem to be hidden now, but I think I remember seeing them in the past.

If you hover over the Elo and Arena points change at the end-game position screen, it displays the fractional component to two decimal places.

[Edit: Seems this only displays for Elo, not Arena points.]

Arena, unlike the usual rating where draws are decided by fractional parts of the rating, has a different system for resolving draws: above in the list is the player who last completed the rating game (not necessarily in the arena)

I do not know who came up with this strange system, but I found out about it on sorryimlikethis (noWonders on YouTube) streams

How odd.

Also, I rescind my previous remark, or rather, half of it.

I can hover and see that my rating after a game is XXXX.64 , but I cannot see any fractional component of my Arena tokens.

What makes you sure that it is that way? Is sorryimlikethis some insider from BGA? (Not asking to discredit or anything, I just want to know.) It has happened that people thought they figured out some BGA mechanic but then were proven wrong.

I mean, couldn't it simply be that there are fractional points determining the ranking but you cannot see them?

I do not know from what he knows this, but he showed several examples when, after completing a non-arena game , the position of people with the same arena ranking changed, confirming his words. (I know that examples sometimes can lead to wrong results.)

I don't have any official confirmation of his words

Ok, this is real evidence then, thanks. It is still a little hard to believe because it is so stupidly odd. But it does fit to the general impression that BGA sometimes makes extremely odd choices, particularly when it comes to the creation of a competitive environment.
Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

Wait, so what does this mean practically speaking? If someone ties me for first, they get the tiebreaker. But then if I play a non-arena game, I can retake first?

Yes, it seems so. It seems that this exact thing happened 2 seasons ago at the very top of the Railroad Ink Arena ranking. https://boardgamearena.com/halloffame?g ... &season=22 I know that the "victim" 2nd place player posted about it somewhere, can't find it right now. I don't think the 1st place did it in any way delibirately, the Arena winner of that season is an absolutely renowned and respected player who definitely earned the Arena champion title, and they play a lot of non-Arena games at all times. However, it is obviously a very unsatisfying season finish to have it decided that way.
