Give up a running game

Post by myra13 »

A lot of games my opponents are giving up before the end of the game, even though the result is not obvious. I find it quite annoying, because I would like to see how my strategies work. What is your opinion, do you also quit games sometimes and specially when you are loosing.

You can take a look at this thread, which quickly became a discussion about conceding in general, not only on the last turn as the title says:

https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46157

I’ll sum that up for you: some people think it’s totally fine and do it, mostly, but not exclusively in competitive play (Arena), others think that everyone who concedes is downright evil. And the rest are somewhere in between. It’s certainly not specific to Wingspan.

Then it's possible there's something you aren't aware of. The result might be more obvious than you think, either because you missed something on the board state or there's private information like bonus failure showing there's no real chance. Alternatively, they might have had to concede for reasons unrelated to the game state, like having to leave.

While conceding is a universal gaming tool that helps things along, as usual, it comes down to how it's used. If they're conceding at awkward intervals like the end of the game with little to continue with, then it can be irritating. Other times it can save a lot of time to a game that's dragging out an obvious outcome with a lot of empty moves to fill in space and check the boxes until the game is over.

Obviously conceding is a normal thing to do and people that do it are not evil. It's safe to say there's not really any legitimate debate there or having to worry about finding a middle ground between the regular option and something absurd. That would just be falling for the golden mean fallacy. It would be like someone arguing you should poison all of your food vs someone saying you shouldn't poison any and they come to the compromise of only poisoning half of their food. Sometimes people post unhinged things, whether they're just trolling or mentally unwell. There's no need to take such things seriously.

thank you for sending me the link. obviously there are different opinions about conceding, sometimes it is just annoying to not be able to see the final result of your strategy.

I get many games where the opponent concedes. I can not find out how to concede? Is concede when they are playing a comp game which starts. It doesn’t seem to be related to winning or losing ..mostly when outcome is boring

Can anyone show me where it is? Thanks. Also ihav3nt worked out how the messageexcept at the end is some games?

You click on the hamburger menu in the top right, one of the options is to concede the game. Conceding in that way is only possible when the game progress has reached at least 50%. Leaving a game before that point can only be done by quitting, which affects karma negatively, unlike conceding. Not sure if you get a notification if your opponent concedes, I guess it will be just a message like “the game … has ended”.

Thanks so much. I do get a message saying the other player conceded. Other times I get the other player has timed out. That does make this site better. I don’t mind if someone concede when the result is obvious myself….otherwise it does tend to get boring. I’d prefer to spend my time playing an interesting or more challenging game. I have never conceded myself but May dosonow when I’m stuck ina game.. maybe about one in thirty games or if I have to leave

I see ‘conceeding’ as a fair way to leave the game if I get interupted by something in my ‘real’ life that I cannot ignore and need to abandon the game. It sucks to do it. I don’t like it but when I do it’s not because I am loosing. I always finish a game even if I know I will loose as courtesy and to learn and continue improving my play.

People who leave a game and time out, or quit a game, when there's more than two players automatically gifts a "win" to all the remaining players, and completely screws the winner out of the solo victory they earned.

I just played a game where I won by 20+ points against two other players. One had an ELO higher than mine, meaning I would've improved my ranking significantly. The other had a 100 ELO and bad karma, and timed out on the very last turn. As a result, both me and the high ELO player tied for a victory and I got a negligible boost to my ELO and Arena ranking, because I didn't "defeat" the higher-ranked player.

It's complete BS, especially in Arena play, and violators need to be completely banned from Arena play at a minimum.
