Playing with family members for ELO

Post by Fejiberglibstein »

My family members share the same IP as I do, is it considered ELO boosting if I play games with them for ELO when we are all trying to win?

If you suddenly jump to 600 elo maybe, otherwise you should be grand. Me and my wife play a lot together and haven't had any issues

I’d also add that if one of you always wins, then it certainly could look like Elo (which is a person’s name and not an acronym) boosting, but if you all lose to each other at least some of the time, it’s much less likely to look suspicious to outsiders.

I suspect many people play on here with family members (including me and several of my friends). There's no automatic detection of such issues, someone would need to report you, but if you are actually playing each other properly, and not using multiple accounts to boost your Elo, it should be hard for someone to provide evidence enough to be successful in a report against you.

If one of you always wins, after 6 matches your elo change will be 0 (unless you wait a few weeks between games).

If you play against each other, but also play against other people, it would be less likely to look suspicious. On the other hand, if you never play against anyone else and don't rise to the top of the charts, no one will notice or care.
