Casual swearing and sexual references in chat

Post by LilacKayak »

I’ve been part of a community who all enjoy the same game. Over the past couple of years, however, the chat has developed more casual swearing and sexual references. It has become normal to trigger the warning message. I find it very unfriendly. I’ve mentioned this privately to some of the members who speak in this unfriendly way. But I have been challenged and asked if I am religious or something.
So I have stopped playing this game. I turn down all the invitations to play. But this is my favourite game here. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

Sorry to hear that. If I get it correctly, it’s not about typical harassment, which I think should be reported regardless of where it happens, but about using certain words or references as expletives? Bad enough. First and foremost, I get that for sure, it’s about how you can continue to play the game. You could just queue for regular games, if there are enough, and befriend people that seem ok. You could join the group Talkative and Friendly Games and have a look if someone is interested to play that game. Talkative doesn’t mean people are necessarily chatting all the time, although that can happen, it’s more about being casual and friendly, saying hi, maybe talking a little about the game in progress, not kicking people running out of time etc.

Or you could give those players you want to avoid a red thumb on their player profile, which means you won't play with them again.

I think the trigger warning in the chat is there for a reason (speaking generally), and if you feel uncomfortable with those chats, I encourage you to report those players via their profile. As far as I know, the moderators are able to read the chat in those cases, so you don't have to give details, but the player name and the table number.

Language is a source of misunderstanding. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery: The Little Prince) But it is also the source of understanding - it all depends on how you use it. :-)
