Tacta: May the Dots Be with You

Post by BalGAmor »

It’s all connected! In this sneakily strategic card game, you flip, twist, and turn your cards to align and cover your opponents’ shapes with matching squares, triangles, and rectangles.

Tacta is a highly competitive card-laying game. You hold a deck of 18 cards in a single color. Each turn, you must place a card in the playing area. The game continues until all players have placed their 18 cards. Whoever has the most visible dots in the playing area at the end wins the game.

Visible dots? What’s that about? When you place a card, it has to overlap at least part of another card already in play. The game becomes a battle of shifting power: your visible dots (and your score) can be covered by your opponents, stealing points away from you. Of course, you’ll do the exact same thing to them. Don’t just focus on offense, though—protect your own dots when you can!

It might seem complicated at first but, worry not, BGA is here to guide you through all the possible card placements.

Your points will come and go as your opponents can cover parts of your cards, making some dots invisible. In the same way, you will overlap their cards and change their score. So, protect your dots when possible!

Analyze, strategize, and optimize because, in Tacta, every card counts. If it is still unclear, you can give the tutorial a try. When you are ready to jump in, here is where you need to go:

A huge thank you to Jason Tremblay, the game designer, and The Op Games, the publisher, for having Tacta on the platform. And thank you to BanBan, the developer, for making it shine on Board Game Arena for players everywhere to enjoy!

This was your Monday release.
Stay connected, take care and play fair…

The game is currently too harsh when judging card overlap. The rules clearly show that the very outside borders of the cards may overlap with secondary cards - ie. The very outer edge beyond the outside white border can touch multiple cards.

There were situations where it was basically "one pixel" of overlap denying card placement.

Another suggestion would be an option to choose (when setting up the game) whether or not you let the game tell everyone how many dots each player currently has covered. This is something you wouldn't know while playing the physical copy unless you paid perfect attention and had a perfect memory. This changes the strategy from: "target the player with the most visible dots and hope you win" vs. "target the player with the fewest covered dots and know exactly who is currently winning"

Aside from that I will say the game is well done and easy to play!
Excellent work, thank you!

Agree with the post above re: being able to see dot count and the one pixel overlap issue, but very glad to have a favourite game on here to be able to play with my non-local friends!

This has been reported since the game was in Alpha, but it was, as I understand, the publisher's decision to enforce the overlap rules so harshly in the BGA version, even though there are clear examples that according to the physical rules, should be valid. Like this:

I agree with developer not to allow even slightest overlaps. It's pure geometry here.
I'd like to set an option of a game, to see other players attempts. Even invalid ones. In default setup (= no free play or team) It would:
  • simulate real play with friends
  • add slight advantage to see what others have in hand (if they decide not to use the card)
  • see they are not sleeping (especially newcomers spend tone of time thinking)
  • prevent dead ends when we see other player's invalid attempt = speed up game

First of all : thank you for this beautiful game!
I'm not sure I want to see the attempts while waiting. I think it's good not to know one anothers cards. But if at all possible, it would be nice to be able to try out while waiting. This could as well speed up the game. If you're more than two players it can be really long to last.

Yes the harsh strict overlay has completely put me off the online version. Also, when you click on the card it should only show you valid places for you to place.
