It's a very solid and useful analysis. I don't agree with all of it, different players will always have different preferences. But I think most top players could agree that the Ray is the best card and Koala is the worst. Of course, tier lists would differ based on game variant and player count.

I think the poster in the link also summarized well what is probably the "biggest flaw" of the game: "I think that there is an interesting knock on effect that the best Spirit Animals (Lion, Butterfly, Turtle) not only are the most VP efficient ones, but they also combo with the best Animal cards!"

I don't agree that Koala is the worst animal. It's probably in bottom 3 (definitely bottom 5) but Wolf, in my opinion, is easily the worst animal. Wolf has no redeeming qualites at all. It's practically impossible to complete and even the 1st cube is only 4 points, making it very bad 1-cuber for the endgame (especially as the single cube is still very clunky to do).

I also can't understand why Arctic Fox is F tier on that list. It's not great but it has a great combo with Bee and it's moderately easy 10 points. For me, it's either B or C tier.

It also seems a travesty that Penguin and Kingfisher are on same tier. Kingfisher is, for me, the 2nd worst card in the game (maybe a tiny bit better on side B) while Penguin is very solid (even A tier, I'd say).

My latest attempt at a tier list had Duck and Manta at S tier, and Wolf at F tier. Those three are the only hills I'm willing to die on.

The power rankings of a card are relative to how a player uses it. A card is gonna seem bad if you try to use it in cases where you shouldn’t, and it’s gonna seem op if you only use it in cases where it works perfectly.

Kingfisher is a card you are probably going to use rarely, but it can be great when it allows you to get free points from a tree standing next to your river, and with Alligator and the right set up it’s deadly.

The problem is that probably most players aren’t going to use it wisely, so this gives the card a bad reputation so to speak. In comparison, a card like Duck doesn’t really have a wrong way to be used, so it’s known as a reliable card that anyone can use to good effect.

I agree with the idea that Wolf may actually be in the running for worst card. Even when it’s used with all the right combos, it can still feel underwhelming in terms of points. I guess the difference with Koala is that people don’t even attempt to complete it, so there is less of a disappointment with the card. Koala as well as Arctic Fox can often be a bit of a trap for less experienced players.

I’m personally less enthusiastic about Penguin. I think it’s a card that tends to give the illusion that you're achieving a lot with it, when in reality you’d probably be better off not cutting your river. Obviously it’s deadly with Ray, but most of the time it’s a very neutral card.

The way I think of the power rankings in Harmonies is mostly about "How much I want to use an early pick to a particular animal with the intention of planning my board around its completion?". After a few rounds, perceived rankings don't matter - the later choices are dictated by the animals taken, animals available, boards and available tiles (or in other words, be flexible and seize your opportunities).

In that regard, I consider Kingfisher bad. It's not an animal I want to rely on from the beginning. It can be a good late pick for a cube (or even two), but the games where it's pickable early on are extremely rare. Something like Duck, on the other hand, is so flexible and easy to complete that it becomes a lucrative early pick. I don't think there's anything deeper when it comes to card rankings.

About Penguin and rivers, I may be a slight anomaly among the high level players when it comes to water. My water scoring is a lot lower than most other top players (only 9.52 average while most others are 12+). I've come to a conclusion (which may be correct or not) that often you lose more points from animals than you gain by pushing your river length. It's possible (even likely) that my enthusiasm towards Penguin is related to my personal play style.

This is how I see it as well. I think of the "strong" cards as the ones I feel comfortable starting with and basing my strategy on. With that said, that definition of "strong" is somewhat arbitrary, so I wanted to say that given the right circumstances most cards can be op in their own right.

It is rare but there's games where I picked it on my first or second turn because I planned for the Alligator combo (taking into account that the other player is unlikely to pick those cards), or because I was planning for a long river that fits the pattern.

I consider the card secretly OP in the 4 players games I play on side B, because it fits the way the water is arranged on that map and, more importantly, because the other players are unlikely to pick the card. In multiplayer games, you are generally more focused on your own game than on denying a good card to your opponents. So this means that you can plan for a board that makes good use of Kingfisher while also delaying picking the card, going first for the cards that other players are more likely to be battling for.

It can seem a bit backwards because it's essentially saying "the card is good because most of the time it is bad", but in effect making use of that can give you an advantage in building a better board than your opponents.

That's interesting data (I've been wanting to get premium for a while, but I'm not happy with some of the recent decisions of the site).

I'm of a similar view on water, I regularly have games where I have close to no water points because I'm focused more on my overall game plan, and sometimes a river doesn't fit into that. I avoid picking water for its own sake.

I agree that if you aren't going to have a substantial river anyway, then capitalizing on the Penguin points is good. If on the other hand you already have a long river that you can mostly fill with animals, it's generally going to be more beneficial to keep exploiting those points than to cut your river with those greys. You are losing 4 water points, so if you place say two greys, that's in effect 8 points you are earning from the two greys, which is okay but maybe not as good as how you could have used those two tiles otherwise.

I checked and your water average 11.99. It's not directly comparable to mine because we play different games (4 player vs 2 player), but mine still feels a bit anomalous :D

All in all, I feel like we think very similarly about the game. We just prefer playing different player counts.

Haha, thanks for telling me my data.

Most of my games are 2 players, it's just there's a few tournaments I play that are 4 players.

My water average may skew upwards a bit because of the few hundreds games I played when I wasn't as serious about the game, so I probably focused more on long rivers back then. It would be interesting to see how your average for each metric changes across time.

Haha, my water average is 14.25 (of 104.3 average points overall). :D

I also checked previous Arena winners and some top players:
water average (overall average)
opu928 - 15.02 (115.0)
Vincent077 - 13.3 (106.1)
andyxdz - 13.43 (111.9)
Frogodo - 11.68 (101.2)
Ellektra - 12.85 (105.0)
kevin-linus798 - 12.86 (114.7)
zzyoblivion - 12.96 (110.5)
tbhp - 12.0 (106.9)
Jscsomeone - 12.35 (109.3)
jhlim - 16.42 (106.7)

So you guys seem to be more the exception! (But of course it depends a lot on how often you play which version and which player counts and which opponents.) I think the diversity speaks for the game, it is great that top players can have different playstyles and there is no single clear winning strategy.

My stats from playing exclusively 2-player games. Majority is Side A but there are few Side B tournaments as well. I haven't played as much lately (I hate round robin and there's been a sudden influx of that tournament type lately), though. Also, I only play turn-based so I rarely engage with the Arena.

Overall: 106.46
Trees: 10.02
Mountains: 4.84
Fields: 8.48
Buildings: 13.66
Water: 9.52
Cards: 59.94

Haha, you have the very suspect who is responsible for that influx right here, it's me. I really like round robin because it let's me play a bunch of games that belong together in a foreseeable fixed time limit, and I created a lot of two-stage round robin + KO tournaments recently.

So not only are we opposites in our preference for water tiles but also opposites in preference for round-robin. :D

Thanks for sharing your stats. It's really great that both you (water 9.52) and jhlim (water 16.42) can have a 600+ Elo. It would be very interesting if we could filter those by game variant, player count, etc.
