Questions about the workflow of translations

Post by BuddaBruda »

Hello everyone!
I have been translation on BGA for some time, but now I am wondering how this process works.
In general I am interested in learning more about the system, like:
By whom and how are the individual blocks to be translated created?
How is it decided when certain games/existing tutorials are open to be translated.

Just curious about this

Short overview:

1. The English texts are created by the developer of the online implementation (exception: the texts for the tutorial are provided by the creator of the tutorial).

2. The translation into other languages is done by volunteers from the community.

3. If a translation of a text is not changed by anyone for 30 days, it is automatically considered validated.

4. Validated translations can only be changed by experienced translators. To do so, you must have played the game at least 10 times, have at least 90 karma, and have been with BGA for at least 3 months. If you find errors in validated translations and are not authorized to edit them yourself, you can ask in the language specific forums if someone would like to correct them.

5. Changes to English texts can be requested by by experienced users. Every change to English texts is reviewed by moderators. Alternatively, a bug report can be created for the game so that the developer can correct the text.

6. Games can be translated as soon as they are available as beta versions (or max. 24 hours later). As long as games are alpha, they can only be translated by the developer (but this rarely happens because the developer already has enough to do with developing the game).

7. Translations and changes to translations are usually visible within 24 hours (in the past, the automatic daily update of new and changed translations has not worked properly on occasion, but that was a bug and normally translations go live after 24 hours).

For more details, see the official translation FAQ and the forum post Fixing Validated Translations: new process!

Thomas, you explained that very well!

Here are two small additions:

As you said: "Validated translations can only be changed by experienced translators." This includes trusted translators (with more than 100 validated translations) (see https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13468).

The tutorials become translatable only when they become official (Live status) (see https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29758), so beta tutorials are not yet open for translation.

Thanks you for those expansive explanations.
I do have one more question reggarding point 6: Is there a way to know, when games are available as beta versions, like is there a group, where this is announced? I'm interested, because, if I knew what games would be coming onto BGA in the future, I could prepare myself better by reading the rules / checking the game out in advance.

Again, thank you and have a good day :)

Thank you for the additional info! In part I asked, because I was wondering, why the Tutorial for Tipperary couldn't yet be translated, but I missed the fact, that it's still in Alpha let alone Beta.

Thanks for clarifying and have a good day :)

Watch out for announcements at /forum/viewforum.php?f=243 (but keep in mind, that announcements are done manually, so some games may be announced late or never).

You can check the beta section of the BGA library to never miss a new beta game: https://boardgamearena.com/gamelist?isBetaStatus=
