I don't really see the problem with that. Recently in Harmonies there was a single elimination tournament of 512 players, and the 8 players that were in the quarter finals were, more or less, the best 8 current players at the game.

I understand that it can be nice to shake things up and make things more random, but I also really like when a tournament ultimately comes down to the best players meeting each other.

It's like in football I prefer it when the final stages are a big showdown between the historical teams, rather than when some surprises invite themselves in. But at the end of the day, it's personal preference.
Single elimination tournaments have always been coded with perfect seeding like you described where the top 8 players would be fully split up in the brackets so they could all reach quarterfinals.

I was just going to comment since I got the bug report update.

Serpentine distribution for group stage should now work:
March 25th, 2026 release
Optimization: Player panels are now rendered client-side for improved performance.
Audio Stability: Sound files are now bundled directly within the game logic for more reliable playback.
Game Flow: Improved the clarity of end-of-game messaging for various scenarios, including solo play and spectators.
Visual Fixes: Corrected the display formatting for premium currency symbols.
Notification Reliability: Improved splash notification persistence to ensure alerts remain active during page redirects.
Tournaments: Introduced new distribution options for tournament and group matchmaking to improve organization.
Can someone make a new tournament to verify?

It was created pre-update, but look at this I created yesterday https://boardgamearena.com/tournament?id=542404.

Scroll down and on the right hand side you will see the groups are set to typewriter (as I didn't have the option when I created), but you can see the options I changed for table setup (to Serpentine and Random).
