Is this game very lopsided?

Post by DrHadey »

I really enjoy the game, but it seems to me that it is incredibly lopsided for Editor. Am I missing something?

If you go to BoardGameGeek, there are people complaining that the Nixon side has the advantage. Note this poll with nearly 400 voters:

How many times have you played it so far, OP? How many different opponents? This is the kind of game where it might take some time to learn how to play one side. Suddenly you play against a strong opponent and see a strategy you hadn't seen yet.

Played this a few times here, and at home a few more. I think I'm in camp Nixon seems be strong in the early game but it balances out... for now anyway. :)

The pool clearly fact tha Nixon as a strong adavantage and i think so, gambit can be played twice and it's just a very very unbalanced card !!!
and the way to win is also easier, just focus on 5 red dots!

vert difficult to play this game like this

I am either missing something or seeing something others aren't, but it seems really difficult to win as Nixon...

The game is heavily, heavily lopsided. Whichever side you're playing as is disadvantaged whereas the side you're not playing as is given overpowered cards and will probably win.

I went through my games and now I understand why I felt this way, it is kinda funny.

My record as Editor: 12-2
My record as Nixon: 6-7

So it would seem Editor has an advantage, right? Well, let's look at my record based on opp's elo.

Opp's Elo under 200: 18-1 (12 with Editor, 7 with Nixon)
Opp's Elo over 200: 0-8 (2 with Editor, 6 with Nixon)

So it seems like the game is easy as Editor and hard as Nixon cause (so far) I have been playing harder opponents while I was Nixon than when I was Editor 😅

After more games, I came back to the conclusion the game is too lopsided. Even if Nixon needed just 4 momentum tokens, I would still rather play Editor. It's still fun to play and some games are exciting, but the advantage is big.

Very much agree with the final assessment above. Not sure how to balance it out just right as well.

I think giving Nixon 1 momentum token and changing the rules so that Nixon gets momentum on 0 might not be enough, but it would make the game much more competitive.
