Restoring Karma after forced quit

Post by Great_Martini »

I've recently had a problem with two games of Streetcar. Many people have reported the same problem - the table won't load - but developers have not been able to find the cause. So the only option is to quit the game. As a result, there's a Karma hit (times two) for me, which I feel is unfair since there was nothing I (or my fellow players in those games) could do, and now that lost Karma (from 100 down to 72) is preventing me joining some tournaments. Does anyone know the process for requesting BGA to restore that lost Karma?

Maybe try the “Contact Us / Support” link that’s at the bottom of every page?

It may feel unpleasant, but if your other games are played as normal, the karma is quickly regained. You won't feel an issue with it.

I already have issues: the forced drop has prevented me from taking part in tournaments. I just don't believe a failed game should leave me with a penalty when I had no other option but to quit.

Real-time games are automatically abandoned after something like 4 hours without activity. Wasn't that an option, instead of quitting?

It wasn't a real-time game, or a tournament game, so I'd have simply gone out of time and taken a different hit. I've seen a dozen or so posts about this same problem with Streetcar as well, all of which have the "can't reproduce" response.

I'll drop a note on "Contact Us" then as well.

That seems very shady from them. How does not being able to reproduce a bug make it less valid? If anything, it suggests that there's something wonky they really should be looking into.

If a dev can't reproduce the issue, how are they supposed to fix it? Not necessarily in this case, but sometimes when that happens it means there wasn't actually a bug at all, or the bug was caused by some kind of intermittent factor that's gone away (assuming this bug is happening to multiple people, that seems unlikely though). But even in the case of a genuine bug, if the dev can't reproduce it, how do you expect they will be able to find and fix the problem?

I don't know what tools BGA devs have at their disposal to review a game to try and figure out where a bug happened but it's not a lot from what I can gather. That makes it really hard to see where in the code the problem might be occurring, and there's not a lot a dev can do with that. Being able to reliably reproduce a bug is usually the first step in being able to diagnose and then fix it.

If none of the other players could get into the game either, then it would close down automatically after 35-40 days. You wouldn’t take a hit as long as nobody else could get into the game to eject you.

And if somebody else could get into the game, they could instead abandon the game as soon as everybody was negative, and that wouldn’t impact anybody’s Elo or reputation.

But only one player would be out of time, as it would never be another player's turn.
