Tough starting position

Post by PhilDeFer98 »

Hello,

I just played a 2p game with avalanche + black powder, and had this very tough start. I didn't figure out how to save both the 5s and the k1 without losing to many playable 1 in the way.

Does someone have any suggestion for this case? I claimed to my partner this was impossible, but I might be wrong.

If you were first player, you could clue 5 under the likelihood they will clue you. Usually they’ll save 2s or mark 1s; then you can clue red to mark m1 (if it’s avalanche) and get a play and mark both fives as red

If they were first they’ll prob bomb 5, maybe not as they may have saved 2 and now will clue 1 or k4. But you’re losing a card either way with that hand; so I’d try to take a chance and get plays and won’t lose a card if they don’t play 5 immediately

Let them discard first and have them bomb on the next card they draw with a color clue.

After that you can safely clue green or 1 to save everything.

Give red and once red is played, give 1

Regardless of the number of players, when playing with Black Powder, after a 5 save the second player is obliged not to discard, due to the risk of 1k on the new chop. So you can save 5s safely.

But as fraisuer suggests, red is probably a better clue. It still saves 5r and 5m, and also gets 1r played (and protects 1k even if you have a partner who is unaware of the obligation to avoid a discard).

After red, you can clue 1s, which should save 1k, and your partner plays 1g. Then you can correct with green to prevent the play of the second 1g.

Left side is discard and right is play in this picture. Red comm will cause m5 to be bombed.

Okay, thanks, I hadn’t realised there was an option to set up the hand like that.

In that case, clue nothing for now, and see what gets drawn after discards. You don’t want the chop 1g anyway, and even the 1m isn’t a terrible loss if your cluing options don’t improve.
