Bug stopping play, do I need to cancel subscription?

Post by hvg3akaek »

I'm a Premium Subscriber. I have come across a bug in one game, which I have notified in the bug forum, but haven't had any progress on it. The larger issue is that this bug has crippled the game - I cannot do anything, but it hangs on my turn. Thus, I am almost three weeks "late", and am flagged as having a game overdue. But I still cannot do anything.

Whilst I cannot progress, end, or even quit the game, I also cannot start a new game, as it tells me I am behind in a game, and should hurry up and finish that game before I start a new one.

I am struggling to work out who to contact, or how to contact anyone, to actually move forward with this issue. How do I use the site I am paying for, when a bug that is going unadressed stops me from doing anything, and the 'contact us' option just leads to an FAQ?

(help please! )

Posting a bug report notified the game's developer, if there is an active one, and anyone the developer enlisted to help with bug reports. So that's all you need to do. Trying to contact someone else at BGA likely isn't going to do you any good because in the overwhelmingly vast majority of cases the developer isn't a BGA employee. Either they are a volunteer or a contractor for the rights holder for the game.

It's an unfortunate situation. If this one game out of over 1000 is the only reason you're on BGA, then I can see wanting to cancel your subscription.

*** Judging from your profile, you are doing a lot of thing(s) right now. Is an ongoing turn-based game really stopping you from doing anything else? Then go to the support form "Can't access my account" which would we an appropriate contact form in such case.

Edited: please remain courteous oon the forums.

You can even post a bug about BGA site in general. Then some devs should see it. Because if it does not even allow you to exit the game, that is a site issue, not a game issue. It should never happen that a game bug causes an inescapable game.

It sounds like OP is saying that because they are over time on their game - due to a bug, not through any fault of their own - they cannot start a new one.

Can you ask your opponent(s) to propose ending the game, and explain that you are stuck due to a bug? This should mean the game ends, without you suffering any karma penalty and freeing you from your trap. I have had this from other players before in similar situations. You may need to message them directly, as they are unlikely to see the chat without going into the game itself.

I don't have any direct experience of contacting BGA, but it could be worth going through the support form and finding the closest option you have that allows you to contact them directly, maybe the Karma issues option: https://boardgamearena.com/support

Which game?

I am aware of a small number of games on BGA that have a game-locking bug, and which are no longer in active development and in need of a new developer.

The only game they are in the red on is this one: https://boardgamearena.com/6/kingoftoky ... =822146846 (King of Tokyo Duel)

It’s unclear to me why they can’t quit or propose abandonment. I can load the game just fine (but don’t know the game well enough to see how they are stuck). And based on them being up-to-date on every other game and seeing as how they’ve started (not just joined, but as the host started) new games as recently as 7 hours ago, it’s also unclear to me how it’s blocking them from doing, well, anything.

Just quit the game or propose a mutual quit.

I assume the bug is this one: https://boardgamearena.com/6/kingoftoky ... =822146846, though I don't think I've played that game with The King character, so I don't really know what the bug is. It sounds like the only option is to abandon the game, or if your opponent won't agree, to quit. It's probably worth avoiding that game, or using the feature to ban a monster (even though, as another player notes, this forces you to ban another monster, but at least it means you won't get stuck).

BGA is developed by volunteers. If the dev who works on that game isn't around, or if there isn't currently a dev associated, then the bug may not get fixed. If you wish to, and feel you could learn how, you could look at taking on responsibility for the game yourself and fixing the bug. Otherwise, your choices are not to play, play with the option to ban a monster, or get stuck.

Usually when you are late to play it does block you from playing other tables. Your comment is that they're up to date on other games, so it would seem like that isn't the case here, but it certainly can be. I haven't been late to a table in a good while, so I don't remember the exact scenario where it insists you play on your other table first (may only be for tables you're late to that are in Arena? Which this table is not).

Only arena games, as far as I know. I'm not sure why being in the red on one table would prevent that player form making a move in a different game.
Just based on my understanding of how BGA's site functions. I've never tried to make a move in one game while being in the red on another. Probably because I never go into the red in turn-based games. The one time I did, because of an emergency, I made moves only in that game.
