ELO

Post by Lucan 2 »

If this gets me banned, so be it. But I'm really really annoyed, and it's the ELO. I'm sick and tired of losing all of it every game to player way better than me especially when they have a million and I don't. Either their needs to be an explanation, or the system needs to change. But I can't just be sitting here without it. I'm done with it, and I'm pretty sure I'm just gonna never come back to the website.

Isn't it the matchmaking you are complaining about? I don't see how you can complain about losing ELO in this situation, because when playing against much higher rated players, you will lose almost zero ELO. So it works exactly the way you want it to.

I don't believe you, but if you want to leave the site, go for it. If you were to be banned for something, it would be for trolling a bunch of threads, rather than just being annoyed with BGA. Obviously you're lying about needing an explanation given the numerous ones that have been given to you over time. https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewto ... 29#p228829 and others not listed there. Since you pretty much ignore posts instead of showing any sign of trying to understand there's not much room for sympathy for you.

As for how seriously players should take your claim on elo gaps. https://boardgamearena.com/gamestats?pl ... me_id=1542 The baseline is 10 points, in an equal game you gain 10 for winning or lose 10 for losing. So if you want an idea on the gap just look at how far from 10 the gain or loss is to get a sense of the rate of deviation, and you can check one of those games to see what that rate of deviation converts into. Keep in mind it goes both ways; they're the higher rated player when their gains are lower than +10 and their losses worse than -10.

Listen,

take a deep breath.

If a player is "way better" than you, then the Elo gap should be so large that you barely lose any Elo when you lose.

Which game specifically are you talking about ?

the whole ELO system is pretty weird,
I just got done with a game where i beat someone (handedly 117 - 79 in Ark Nova) with an ELO 196 points higher than me, i had a "24% chance of winning". You know how much rating i gained? A whole 15 points...
I get the whole 10 points is standard, but only an addition 5 points to make up a gap of 196 still seems low when i'm in the 100s and they are in the 300s

15 Elo is a lot. The maximum possible is 20. If you are "expected to win" 1 time out of 4, then it makes sense that there is a 15 to 5 Elo split. One win (+15 Elo) would equal 3 losses (-15 Elo).

I'm not sure what's weird about this.

And elo only cares about differences a 196 gap is a 196 gap, whether you're at 100 or at 500.

The score is in game outcomes, not point totals. So, you won 1-0, the 117-79 is meaningless here.

Then you don't get the whole 10 points is standard. In an even game you win 10 for winning and lose 10 for losing, each are 50% of the 20-point total. You just said you had a 24% of winning, AKA a 76% chance of losing. And you won 15 points. Meaning if you had lost you would have lost 5. That 15-point win is 75% of the 20. Decimals should account for how we went from 25-75 to 24-76. So that additional 5 points is not low at all, that's the 25% shift from the 50/50 standard that we saw in your game.

What were expecting of your gain? For every 1 time you beat them, they can beat you 3 times. That's why the system is rigged so that you win 3 times as much for winning as they do in a head-to-head. Because they can take that level of bias in your favor. If they only beat you 2 times for every 1 time you beat them, then after more games your rating will go up and theirs will go down until the numbers reflect that new gap. I calculate a roughly 120-point gap in that case.

If you want to close the gap, you have to play at that level. When you face 100s at your current rating you have to win more than 50% of the time. When you face 300s like that last player, you just have to win more than 24% of the time. BGA isn't fooled by just 1 game; you have to show some consistency. Right now, when you occasionally break 200, you find it too heavy and drop back down. But when you drop to 100, you find it too light and move back up. If BGA were to switch your rating and that 300 for fun, and then you two kept playing in rated, you both would end up back at your ratings because for them the 100s is too light and for you the 300s is too heavy.

It's only one game at the end of the day. And 24% is still decent odds. Anyway, what you say goes for everyone, so the system is consistent. If you want to rise to the elo of higher rated players, you can't rely on just one win, you have to consistently beat those players.
