Rules Question regarding <001>

<001>'s passive reads "You can't gain energy in any other way (other than its passive triggering off opponent gaining energy)"

So does that mean that in a <001> mirror, no one gains any energy ever? What about when you successfully counter an opponent's card (because the card texts do say gain energy)?

Yep, nobody gets any energy ever even if you counter. It's a pretty wonky mirror.
