Scoring issues?

Post by kayrun »

Could someone review the final scores and walk me through them?
I'm confused about the Row scores. We should use the numbers across the bottom for a complete row + the next row until we see a gap, correct?
So it looks like
Rosie's Grit & Glass would be 23
The Beaver Boutique would be 33
and
Cornelius D. Shellworth's would be 29?

In other words, are the little banners on 2nd row and above only for column scoring?
(and even if we switch to scoring with banners on row 2+, Beaver Boutique's row score isn't making sense for me)

You score for every row, each one until the first gap on that row.
So Beavers Boutique in your example is indeed scoring 22 + 11 + 11 + 0 + 0 = 44 for its rows.

ah, thank you for the explanation!
I thought that once you hit a gap, that was the end of the scoring!
This is a big help -- thanks again.

Hey, I think there is also an issue with the column scoring although that one seems to be a big issue if you go on BGG or groups on FB. I recently had a game with two columns maxed out and a 3rd with one piece missing. The game took the two equal columns as the highest, yet the rules say columns tie, pick leftmost (no?).

Can anyone maybe add further detail about the column tallying... maybe in person, we have been playing it wrong for years lol

There seems to be a lot of confusion about how columns score when tied for height (you're not alone!), so hopefully this helps...

I think the most important thing to understand is that you score the two tallest columns unless there is a tie for the third+ tallest.

Cases:
(1) If two columns are tied for the tallest (all others being shorter), both of those tallest columns will score. No other columns score.
(2) If only one column is tallest and only one is second-tallest, then those two (tallest and second-tallest) columns will score.
(3) If only one column is tallest and two+ others are tied for second-tallest, then the tallest column will score and the leftmost of the columns that are tied for second-tallest will also score.
(4) If three+ columns are tied for tallest, then the two of those (tied for tallest) that are leftmost will score.

I recently did an edit to the scoring section of the BGA game rules. I've included the revised scoring section below.

************************** BGA rules - Game End / scoring section ******************************
First, score points for each row based on how many consecutive spaces are filled. Rows must be filled from the left; any row without a piece in the leftmost column does not score. **Row points are listed along the bottom of the board**.

Secondly, score your 2 highest columns, gaining the points listed on the highest filled space of each of those 2 columns. If the 2nd and 3rd+ tallest columns are tied, then the tied column that is leftmost is scored. If the 1st through 3rd+ tallest columns are tied, then the 2 leftmost columns of those are scored.

Finally, subtract 3 points for each piece of glass in your Overflow area.

The player with the most points wins! In the case of a tie, the tied players share the victory.
