An Option to Remove Wolves from Forest Shuffle

Post by leafyscreen »

It is well acknowledged that the wolf/deer combination is overpowered.

I've played games where I didn't draw wolves or I had few or no deer and was caving or getting wolves discarded, but because my opponent drew wolves, the game was no contest.

Why not have an option to remove wolves from the game like Wingspan has the option to remove overpowered cards?

BGA developers can't just do changes in games' rules just because the BGA players want them. The publisher of the games has legal rights to it, and BGA only gets the license to make a digital adaptation of the game, "by default" it doesn't allow changes in the rules.

For Wingspan, there was some physical expansion instruction that suggested some cards may be removed from the deck and people used it as an argument, so the developer contacted the publisher and got the approval to implement a ban list. It could be done only because the publisher approved.

Forest Shuffle has a different publisher, so unfortunately "it could be done in Wingspan" doesn't mean it can be done here

Have they been asked? It can't hurt. Some who play the table game remove the wolves and I'm not aware of the FS police coming.

I bet you think the snarky sarcasm here was pretty clever but it actually only shows your ignorance.

First of all: when you buy a physical board game you are free to do what you like with the components. The FS police will not come if you take out all the wolves, but they also won’t come if you shred all the cards and use them to line your hamster’s cage. You can do what you like with the physical components, because you paid for the physical components and a few sheets of paper with printing on them. Now, that printing has limitations on what you can do as it is subject to copyright law. And you can’t sell your own gaming using their box etc. That’s intellectual property (IP) law.

This digital adaptation? It is entirely IP material. It’s their rules implemented in code, their artwork, their name, and if things are changed without their permission, the FS Police will will show up. It is not at all the same as what you do with your game pieces in the privacy of your home.

Secondly: they have in fact been asked (that’s just one such instance). Here, in these forums. And they’ve said no. They have been pretty emphatic that they think their game is well-balanced—they are well aware that deer and wolves are powerful and they see nothing wrong with that.

So it’s not going to happen. BGA won’t do it without permission, and permission won’t be given, so you can just take your oh so clever snark and take it somewhere else.

Gee no need to get nasty. I was trying to be funny and I was sincere in wondering if they have been asked. And no, I do not have the insight to how copyrights and licenses work with online games, but that does not make me ignorant.

No you weren’t. Or at least that’s not all you were doing. You were using a level of sarcasm and the sorts of expressions that indicate superiority and being better informed. “Gee, I did XYZ and the gaming police never came to my house.”

This is, in fact, the literal definition of ignorant (definition 2 in particular).

Or instead of removing them, make it so they only score 3 points for each deer. And change the scoring so that each deer scores 2 points for each of their corresponding icons. If they did that then almost every other strategy would be equal footing, because that’s the real problem. Wolves are only half of the problem. And deer are a menace!
