The worst dice roll settings

Post by Avejde »

I’ve been playing this game for years - both online and offline. What can I say? When in a single 20-minute game, 9 and 6 never roll, but 5 and 10 keep showing up the whole time… Fine, one game. Fine, two games. But when it happens constantly for weeks on end, it starts to drive me crazy. And when I play this game offline, these kinds of things are pretty rare. It feels like I’ve walked into a poker room and my opponent keeps hitting four royal flushes one after another. For me, this game is dead until the dice settings are changed.

Could you provide the game numbers where this happened constantly for weeks on end?

You mean you want Catan to implement a manipulated dice-randomizer that makes distributions more smooth than independent random calls often result in?

I'm afraid that would count as a "house rule" which aren't implemented on BGA if they're not officially agreed on by the publisher.
Check out the Allround-League: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=7870115 --> a league where you have matches of random games vs. other players in your group. Season 9 registration oct. '25.

As the previous poster said, what game numbers?

I looked at the last nine games (most recent page of results, excluding one game with no die rolls). None of these games seemed to fit the pattern, and the overall didn't fit the pattern either. I don't have the time or inclination to subject it to more rigourous analysis, but for a sample set of this size it seems reasonable.

Across those games, 6 was the most popular roll (marginally more than 7), and 10 only showed up marginally more than theoretical. Again, perfectly natural, even over 10,000 rolls you would expect some dice to be over-represented and others under, unless someone had deliberately rigged the generator to remove some of the randomness.

There are no "dice settings". Each die roll is random with an equal chance for any of the six results.

No, tt never equal, it always belongs to a player. Just 20% the games I played have that equal chance. 80% will have 1-2 lucky number belongs to only one player. No 6 or 8, maybe no 10,9,5. It could be a lot 4, 3, and even 7 :)))). 30% of a game with 7, and 70% of that 7 is belongs to one player :)))).
If the system dont have settings, they should make it now.

There being an equal chance for each outcome does not mean each outcome must happen the exact same number of times in any given series.

Imagine a single, fair, six sided die where each die face has an equal chance of being rolled.
You roll this die six times.
Are you guaranteed to roll each number exactly once?

There is definitly something about number 5 these two last seasons. The white kinghts no evidence defenders does not play this game and Catan is much more than just dice rolls distribution at the end of the game. Not speaking about the bias algorithm that exists on BGA, something that is apparent if you also play Catan on other sites.

Table #852805717 just rolled 6's 28% of the time.

Annoys me when someone wins because of unrealistic dice rolls and doesn't even acknowledge it and no GG or anything.
I was in a game earlier where I was benefiting from unrealistic dice rolls and I even apologised in the chat because I didn't think it was fair.

And?

43 total rolls. that gives 12 times a 6. According to Google AI (sorry, I'm lazy today), the probability of that happening is about 1.21%, or 1 in 83. You've played 880 games of Catan. Are you suggesting that a 1-in-83 event should never happen to you?
