Game 1, the very first turn of the finals, barrage took out his mobile artillery, which helped with my nerves. My cards weren’t great this game, but the dice were above average and I got some key dice rolls. Good thing because mid game he played infantry assault x 2 and assault center and put some late pressure on my units. Ambush to finish the game, 7-4.
Game 2, I would say this was the pivotal and most interesting game of the match. An air power on my first turn took out his sniper which likely changed the complexion of the game. Early game the cards cooperated and I was following my plan to fight on the axis right. At one point I played medic on my mobile artillery, which I almost never do, and luckily it worked but then he countered and did the same thing with his. Mid-game things turned on a 3 turn sequence when he played artillery bombard to advance his artillery, then TFH took out my key armor unit on just 2 rolls, then he drew and played artillery bombard again, took out my mobile artillery on a 2/2 double grenade roll and suddenly he was up 5-4. I was a bit shocked by that roll and had another single figure infantry within range. My position was looking precarious at that point and the game outcome was very much hanging in the balance. But I had built up a nice hand of 2 move outs and a DHQ and pushed my full strength infantry units on the right, at one point used the new LOS rules to my advantage. At the end he had a chance to win at move 395 if he could get a 1/1 and a 4/5 roll, but he didn’t get either and I used a move out to finish it, 7-5.
Game 3, I had all the cards and dice I needed, and was able to win it handily, 7-2, and with that was Champion.
Game 4, all the pressure was off. He did kamikaze attacks and even though my cards were great, the dice weren’t, and he was able to win 3-7. At least I got 3 medals to win the scenario. Lustik, only 15 years old, played great, he has a bright future. I have a feeling we’ll see each other again.
Really happy to win this Champion’s trophy, the Tournament of Champions. Especially after coming so close last year with 2nd place. Thanks to Sam and Lucky for organizing and all my fellow champions for playing.
