Tournament Round Ended Unexpectedly

Post by Timoteo32 »

Sorry to make another post somewhat "complaining" because I don't mean to be negative but weird things keep happening. I just lost a round of a game a few moves from the end because "he game was abandoned automatically because the players did not manage to finish it before the next round of the Tournament." Except no one had run out of time. Why do our personal counters not add up to the same total as we have for the round? Is this just a poorly designed tournament?

Also, why would the deciding factor be time left on the counter and not score if no one had run out of time? It seems dumb you're penalized for using the time you're allotted.

Is there somewhere to see how much time is left on the overall game counter in cases like this where our personal timers are irrelevant?

It sounds like you are affected by this bug that showed up with the new tournament redesign. It seems to affect tournaments that use playing hours.

Whenever you have an issue with a specific game or tournament, please either provide a link to the game or tournament in question or exhaustively specify all of the settings (the former is easier IMO). The details could be relevant. For example, you didn't say if this tournament had playing hours set. If no one has run of time, my guess is that it did, but I could have easily confirmed that if you had provided a link.

Playing hours is not a poor design in and of itself. The problem is that the recent tournaments framework revamp introduced an unresolved bug that puts too much time on the clock when you set playing hours. The tournament host does not separately specify the amount of time on each player's clock, so it's not their fault. The tournament host specifies the maximum time of the round and the tournament framework is supposed to automatically divide that time evenly among the players. The problem is that the tournament framework is no longer accounting for playing hours and reducing the time on the clock accordingly.

After this bug was discovered, I added a warning to tournaments I was hosting that the clock is incorrect and each round will end in X days regardless of what's on the clock. Until this is resolved I'm not setting playing hours on my newly created tournaments.

Why has that bug still not been fixed? It's been weeks! Surely it's just a case of if(playingHours) then maxTime = maxTime*2 somewhere in the code. Should be a ten minute fix at most.

I don't play tournaments and even when I did, I never used playing hours, so I have no personal interest in this bug being fixed, but I am astounded that it's still there after so long (for what seems like such a simple bug).

If by maxTime you mean the time on each players clock, then it needs to be adjusted by a factor of 1/2, not 2, because 1/2 of the day the clock isn't running. So to keep each round at a fixed maximum time the players' clocks need to be reduced to 1/2 of the time they'd have with no playing hours set. The way it used to work is that roundTime (defined as the length of the round) was fixed, and if there were no playing hours then each of N players got roundTime/N on their clock. If playing hours were in effect, each player got 1/2 roundTime/N because the clock isn't running for 1/2 a day. That way you still never exceed roundTime. But what's happening now is they're missing the factor of 1/2 so people have the same amount of time on the clock they'd have with no playing hours.

But regardless of what the scaling factor is, your point that this should be a simple fix is well taken. As I said in the long thread about the tournaments update, it seems that BGA has "quiet quit" on further fixes, including specifically this one.

No, I mean, the max time per table is set by the tournament creator - 5 days, 15 days, etc. I think all are in days. And since playing hours only use 12 hours per day, then max time per table should be doubled in these tournament.

You need to post a link to the game and the tournament if you want people to troubleshoot.

As a tournament host, when I set a round time at 7 days, I DO NOT want it dragging on for two weeks. I choose that time frame because the game can be completed in that time frame, even if players only play during playing hours. This is how it worked before and how we expected it to continue to work.

It's up to the host to be sure 7 calendar days is enough time.

This is linked to above (twice). I've tried voting for it 10 times, but, alas, it only allows me one.
