Tanbo in alpha

Post by MarkSteere »

Tanbo (田んぼ, Japanese for rice paddy) is a game of roots. Or more precisely, root-like groups. The board starts out populated with loosely interspersed black and white stones. You place a stone orthogonally adjacent to exactly one of your on-board stones. This prevents roots from merging and clumps from forming. When roots become bounded (that is, they have no room to grow) they are removed. If the current root (the one enlarged during your turn) is among the bounded roots, only it is removed, thereby unbounding any other bounded roots. Otherwise all bounded roots are removed. The goal is to be the last player with roots still on the board.

Tanbo was the second game I ever invented, and is still one of my best.
