Number of “Games to Discover”

So I’m trying to play every game on here (not counting alphas).
I currently have 1278 titles played, with the front page displaying 9 Games to Discover.
But when I go to the Games tab and filter “Never played”, I see 30 games.
Of those 30 games:
3 are in alpha status (no idea why they show up on that screen, but ok I ignore those)
1 is not available anymore (Fate of the Fellowship… kind of annoying that it’s still displayed, but I’ll ignore that one too)
11 of those are in Beta, which could make me think that Betas are not included in the 9 Games to discover, but when I finish a game in beta that number does go down…
4 of those I am in the middle of a play, which could me think games already in progress don’t count in the Games to Discover, but then again that number does go down when I finish a game…
Even if ignore all of those 3+1+11+4 still leaves 11 Games to Discover, which is still more than the 9 displayed.

Does anybody have any idea how the number of “Games to Discover” is calculated??

Bravo on the goal! By chance, I've got the exact same numbers on the front page - 1278, 9 to go.

I have never been able to get the numbers to reconcile either.

EDIT: I am pretty certain that the count on the main page has always gone down every time I finish a game in progress, including betas. I don't watch the other counts (contribute page and games page) often enough to comment on those.

EDIT 2: My unplayed betas are 10 (8 playable, 2 with table creation broken), so that doesn't help explain it either.

For me, it's pretty clear "games to discover" includes beta games, and not alpha. Whenever new beta games appear my count goes up accordingly, and my current count matches the number of beta games I haven't played.
I believe games in progress, whether in friendly mode or not, count as already discovered, At least I'd swear abandoned games do. But you say the count goes down when you finish a game, maybe abandoning is "finishing" in this respect.
Some games are moved back to alpha/beta, or change name or implementation. That could mess up with what appears as already played and with the play history and achievements. If you list all the games in your "never played" list, I may be able to recognize if anything unusual happened with some of those games. By the way, my "never played" list includes all alpha games, not just 3, probably because I'm a member of the "BGA reviewers" group.

You already have the "play all available games" achievement, but when I got it when I had, in fact, not played all released games. I had played a number of released+beta games that matched the number of released games, though. So the counts are wonky anyway.

You have an abandoned table in both I'm the Boss and Norsemen, I'm not sure that will count as "played"

With that, I would expect your count to be 11 (the 10 released plus Suspeição).
Tournay seems to be unplayable (https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewto ... 67&t=48928), maybe that accounts for one less.

This one is broken in turn-based last I checked - it doesn't notify players when it's time to negotiate / make deals / whatever that action is called.

Aside, you might be interested in this group for a goal of playing all the games. A little dead, but recently it's picked up. We happened to be chatting about this same topic not long before you posted here. Nothing you don't already know however. It's a mystery why the counts differ on different pages.

Perhaps we could all coordinate a pseudo real-time (turn-based but we're all present and watching for opportunities for dealmaking) I'm the Boss sometime if there is interest. Assuming there aren't any other game-breaking bugs. One of my abandoned games counted as played as a player got booted IIRC, but I've never gotten to play it through.

Regarding the game counts on different pages, I've been watching mine for a bit now and have deduced the following calculations. My numbers are inline as an example.

= Total non-alpha games played or in progress
= Total Beta and Released, less Beta, Released, and Removed already played, minus new Beta and Released games in progress
= 1305 - 1287 - 10 = 8

Main Page (/), "Games to discover"
= Odd calculation... Alpha and Removed games are subtracted from a total that does not include Alpha and Removed to start with.
= Total Beta and Released, less Alpha, Beta, Released, and Removed played
= 1305 - 1301 = 4

= Contribute page, plus add back in Beta and Released games in progress, and remove Alphas played
= 8 + 10 - 14 = 4

Games page (/gamelist), Beta and Released remaining
= True list of games remaining, excluding Alpha
= Games page, Never played, minus Games page, Alpha, Never played
= 237 - 218 = 19 (4 to learn, 5 broken, 10 in progress)

I haven't checked your numbers, but maybe this happens because some games were removed from the site (see https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34065)? I could imagine they count as "games you played", but don't show in the list of "total games on the website" any more.

Or maybe I am only hallucinating things
