The allotted time is too long.

Post by haku1030 »

I hesitated about whether I should write this here, but please allow me to report it.
I won't mention the other person's name just in case, but there's a player I'm currently playing with who has an unusually long time limit. I checked several of the tables he's playing at, and in every single one, his time limit is unusually long.
Is this considered cheating? If there's no problem, I can also write personal names.
It's clearly abnormal, but since there wasn't a category for reporting players, I'm asking here.
This problem is severely hindering the progress of the game he's playing at.

They probably used a time joker which adds an amount of time to the existing thinking time. I think it adds two or three days, can't remember. This is useful if you're going away for a few days or if you get sick or something like that. It's definitely not cheating to use a time joker.

Also it is not allowed at all to call out other players by name on the forums, so good you didn't do that.

Go to Games In Progress page and click the stopwatch icon in the upper right.
Time Jokers

A Time Joker allows you to take more time to play your turns on your current turn-based games, in SIMPLE mode and ARENA mode only. (For example, when you are on holiday or when you are having difficulty keeping your schedule.)
Each Joker is worth 4 days.

Although this will extend any games in progress, it is limited to 4 days and will not affect TOURNAMENT mode.
Be careful of when and how you use them.
You will get your 4 Time Jokers back on January 1st every year.

I knew about the existence of Time Joker, but I didn't think it could be applied to all tables.Thank you for your reply.

Some people literally play dozens of turn-based tables at a time. The 4 time jokers would be pretty useless if they only applied to one table.

I have mixed feelings about the time jokers. It is good for players to have a way to say "I am having a personal emergency / going to be somewhere without access for a couple days", but on the other hand the other players at the table might not have joined if they knew you were going on vacation the next day. Perhaps when a time joker gets used the other players should be given the option to vote on collectively abandoning the game?

Created in 2022, has not been analyzed by the developers yet. It's a good thought but I doubt there's going to be any functional changes to the site. Doesn't seem like they're even going to look at the suggestion.

Yeah, it seems a bit of a weird feature.

I mean, most of the time we accept that if people go out of time, they can be kicked out. It doesn't really matter what the reason they are out of time is. So if we are gonna have a feature that says some reasons are okay, then why limit it to 4 times a year? Why not more? Why not any time? It seems like an arbitrary choice.

Secondly, nothing is preventing people from using those time jokers for reasons that don't have to do with emergencies or unexpected leaves, but rather strategic reasons. So now the time joker is allowing people to just extend games because it benefits them, which may not seem very fair.

It would have been more honest if they had presented the feature as "this is a joker you can use at your own discretion, for any reason you may see fit". In this case, it would make sense why it's limited to only 4 times a year. And it would fit better with what a "joker" is for.

I don't agree with your last sentence though, because that would defeat the purpose of a time joker. What is the point of using it if the other players are sill going to abandon the game anyway? You'd just have wasted a joker for nothing. So it's either make the joker available and working as intended, or not have it at all.

Your second paragraph answers your first one. In the end, every design choice is an arbitrary choice made to help reach a balance between conflicting goals.

Also, as stated by Meeplelowda a little above, this feature is exactly presented as something to allow people to take more time to play, having an emergency or being on vacation are just 2 possible use of this feature given as an example.
