Some things I don't understand

So I only started getting into barrage just yesterday, so I am not really familiar with the rules but I have a few questions:

1. automas: So I noticed automas keep doing multiple actions in a single turn. Is that normal or is that a special setting, that I have to change? For example, they just put their engineers to get tasks in the patent office and then just build structures in the same turn. Or they go on the field, where they would turn their wheel and build a structure or do production. I don't really understand the concept behind this, since I can only do 1 actions, no matter the order... How does that work? And how can I change that?

2. starter patent: Another thing I noticed is, that I always have the same 4 patents to choose from, when starting a game. Is that normal? Or can I randomize that somehow?

The OP said patents, and you said contracts, and there are both patents and contracts in the game, so I can't tell if you're talking about the same thing and made a typo, or you're talking about something different.
