Help with In-Person Game where Points were miscalculated

Post by xperiances »

We are discussing this point since 2 days and cannot come to a satisfying conclusion for the both of us. Please help.

Here is the situation:

1. A ends the round with "Last Chance" and calls 13 Points.
2. B notices A actually has 14 Points but doesn't correct A.
3. B thinks they only need to beat 13 Points and plays their turn accordingly.
4. After their last turn, B scores 14 Points.
4. Before collecting the cards, A calculates the points again and now gets 14 Points (which is correct) for both A and B

Now we are at an impasse.
B says the round should be scored as 13:14, because A ended the round by calling 13 Points. B assumed they now only need to beat 13 Points and played accordingly.
A says, the round should be scored as 14:14 and B knowing that A really had 14 Points means there was no disadvantage to B in correcting A's points after the fact.

How would you apply the rules and what you deem fair to this round? And most importantly: How would you score the round? 13:14 or 14:14?

14:14 . Should really tot u the points when someone announced Last Chance. If B noticed A actually had 14 and not the 13 as announced they should have said something right there.

That's a tough question.

I would say that the announced score must be correct. If it is incorrect, it must result in a disadvantage for Player A.
Player B must be able to naively rely on Player A's announcement and play accordingly.
So based on that, I would say 13-14.
Of course, if it had been an erroneous call of 15, the rule would have been to use the actual score of 14 once it was discovered. Or even to record a score of 0 in an official competition.

But something important was said. Player B seems to have admitted that he was aware of the error but did not correct it and used it to beat Player A. That’s not very fair play. For me, this admission makes me lean more toward a 14-14.

There’s only one scenario that could make me change my mind:

A: “LAST CHANCE! WITH 13 POINTS!!”
(no hint of any doubt about the number of points; contrasting example: “LAST CHANCE! I think I have 13 points”)
... (same scenario as OP)
B: "14 points, I’ve won the round!"
A: "Wait... I actually have 14 points! I’ve won the round!"
B: "No, I played on the basis that I needed to beat 13 points; I might have played differently if I’d known that 14 wasn’t enough..."
A: "You should have counted yourself!"
(here, in my view, there is a lack of fair play on A’s part, who should concede victory to B given the information he has, i.e. that B has not yet admitted to him that he had previously recounted)
B: “I did recount! But it’s your mistake; I’m not supposed to correct it to my own disadvantage”

In this specific scenario, both players lack sportsmanship. A should have conceded victory before B’s admission. I’d suggest a fight to settle it

I guess for championship's there can be specific rules for that case.
As its a home game, just play with the correct points (14:14) - we play it normally that both players count the points together before the game proceeds.

Especially for the unfair sportsmanship from B

As the rules don't really say anything about announcing the score (only to show the cards, which means the score is public knowledge and may be calculated by each player), we now play without announcing our score upon LAST CHANCE. And we scored the game based on the public information visible on the table, not based on the calculation mistake. So 14:14 and the LAST CHANCE won :)
