How to think about the first move...

Post by AKA-MechDARIUS »

The first move of the first player exposes an empty board, making it a target for the second player's subsequent play.

To withstand this targeting, we choose cards like '5' or '6'.

5 (6) are not particularly high numbers and can easily be surpassed by the opponent.

Therefore, we play them in the edge columns, such as column 1 or 9.

For the opponent to secure the edge columns, they must spend cards with higher numbers than 5 (6) on these "low-value" edge columns.

In that case, we hope that the backlash will manifest in the battle on the central front, causing them to run out of high-numbered cards.

The reason for choosing 5 (6) instead of 2 or 3 is that if the opponent saves high-numbered cards for the battle in the center, they can win the edge columns.

If we were to play low-class cards like 1 or 2 in the edge columns, the opponent could win with middle-class cards like 4 or 5, so we don't reveal low-class cards.

What if the opponent decides not to contest the edge column (since it's not very valuable), and saves their high cards for the center anyway? We might win the edge column, but we've used a 5 or 6 to do it, which might have been more useful in the center.

First of all, thank you for responding to my post.
I am eager to exchange tactical ideas with players around the world, so I look forward to hearing your opinions and feedback in the future.

Regarding your question, here is my take on the matter:

If you "open" (play first in a lane) with a middle-class card (4–6) in the center, you will find yourself at a disadvantage if your opponent counters by playing a high-class card (7–9) over it.
Conversely, if your opponent "opens" with a high-class card, a middle-class card won't be enough to win unless the opponent fails to complete their high-class play.
Under similar circumstances, a low-class card (1–3)—rather than a middle-class one—is sufficient to counter a high-class card. There is even a dedicated support card known as the "Shield" for this purpose.
You *could* counter with a middle-class card if your opponent makes a weak move by "opening" with a low-class card, but unless they are suffering from a bad hand, I wouldn't count on that happening very often.
