New translations interface (redesign) flaw

Post by mirkosrndovic »

As of today the new look for translations page improved the visibility, but one thing makes it now harder to translate game, and that is
the refresh of the page after each translated string.

My workflow is to get all the source strings, translate them bulk with google translate, get them back into the translation page (programmatically fill in all the textareas with google translated strings, and then go over them all and fix irregularities manually, which allowed me to translate a page of 50 strings in 10-15 minutes.

Can it be made that a page does not refresh after every translation. It additionally removes the already translated string, which confuses me.

Thanks for sharing some feedback about the new layout.

I understand that the page refreshing is slowing down the way you usually do things.

It is set up this way because we’re aiming for manual, careful translations. We value the local knowledge that only players like you can bring.

Honestly, if we wanted machine translations, we wouldn't need to ask the community for help! 😉

The strings disappearing as you go is meant to help you stay focused on what’s left to do, one step at a time.

We really appreciate the time and effort you're putting in to help make the game better and more accessible for everyone.

I think that the string disappearing makes it harder too. Often when there are several similar strings, I refer to the ones I've just translated for consistency. And sometimes I notice a typo immediately after submitting (it just happened today that I typed something in lower case, for example, when it should have been upper). The focusing on what's left to do is already accomplished by it changing color, IMO.

It second this. It makes it harder to have consistent translations, to fix previous entered texts and to add comments to newly added translations. Consider keeping the textboxes where they are; if I want to hide already translated texts, I can use the filter for untranslated texts and refresh the page manually.

By the way: When I need to confirm my translation, for example because it is the same text in English and in my native language (or because I edit a verified text, or because the text ends different in English and my language), the popup dialog (are you sure?) does not close, when I confirm, but stays and shows an error.

When I translate the first (top) string, the rest of them get shuffled, even with filter for context, for example. That is confusing.

I agree with both @Thomas and @Spiegel428 as I also used already translated strings to better see typos, errors, inconsistencies. Sometimes I even wanted to have an option to display all strings, not just 50, so I can check, search and replace all occurrences of the mistake I've noted. And I used comments to indicate strings that I need to check by playing a game to better see what the context of that string is.

I've just clicked out of the translation box to get some numbers in brackets from original string and it dissapeared, like I finished translation. I had to go to find that string, changing filters, searching for that one.

Also, the blue circle with question mark icon covers few letters in translation box (when string is so long that it reaches top right corner where that circle is)

There is another but: the translator comment gets HtML-encoded twice, so that special characters and umlauts are displayed as quoted entities like ‚ or ö (which makes it harder to read the comments).

As others have already pointed out, this is a genuinely poor design choice that makes the workflow harder and reduces translation quality.

In the old interface, it was common to notice a typo only after the text had turned green. Now the text disappears immediately, making it much harder to review and even to copy if needed.

The issue is even worse on touch devices, where typing special characters such as brackets, local accented characters, emojis, and similar symbols can be quite cumbersome. Users often have to copy them from another source. On top of that, an accidental tap anywhere outside the text field can instantly submit the translation.

While we're on the subject of special characters and formatting tags, a very useful addition for touch devices would be a button that copies the original text directly into the editing field for further modification. Copying and editing text on a mobile device is often frustrating, especially when translating guides or instructions that contain numerous color tags and other formatting elements which must remain unchanged.

There are three current bug reports related to the new translation center:

The "é" is not correctly written in the new translation interface in the translator's comments.
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=225633

Modification of validated translations is no longer limited to 'seasoned' players
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=225538

New translation interface - Translated entries go at the end of the list
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=225568

If you think, these bugs should be fixed, please vote for them (and optionally add a comment to them).

By the way: thanks for implementing the suggestion „Sort by Validated (%) in Translationhq“!
