Why is my ranking so much lower than another player

Post by HoganLong »

A game finished I was beat by someone with over 50 points more than me. He went up by 30 and I went up by 7. What??
Here are screen shots:

You can see for one player he got 12 points and I got 7 and for another he got 7 vs my 5.... this is while he was 336 to my 280

I also lost 5 points to losing to him while he won 11 -- this makes no sense... he should win, he is bigger than me. What is going on?

A player gets more ELO for the first games to get the ranking sorted quicker. You already played 69 games, so you are at the standard k-factor. The other has played only 17 games so far, therefore their k-factor is 2x.

Normally a player gains rating their opponent lost to them, in this case they gained twice as much as you lost, indicating their k factor is twice as high. the reason is because their account is new to BGA Cartographers, BGA doesn't know what their real rating is and makes larger changes to adjust until it has enough games to be fairly comfortable with their stats. You'll find it was the same for you in your early games. I'll note this applies not only to wins, but also to losses, if you had beaten them, they would have lost twice as much as you gained.

I forget what the exact game count is where it shifts offhand, but if you check your own profile you'd be able to spot it, it will probably be some game number like 20 or 40, etc.

Games 1-10: K-factor = 60 (3x)
Games 11-20: K-factor = 40 (2x)
Games 21+: K-factor = 20 (1x)

Yeah, that sounds about right. I'm pretty sure BGA used to have that on their FAQ, but I don't believe it's there anymore. I just remembered them being nice round numbers with 0s at the end.

You're right. It used to be in the FAQ and I have access to the old language because I quoted it a long time ago:
K, the 'elasticity factor,' has a value that depends on the number of games you have played: 60 for your first 10 games, 40 between your 11th and 20th games, 20 for your 21st onwards.
For some reason they removed it. Maybe because less information = more transparency. /s
