The octopus needs three different pairs.

If you're picky, you could think those are different pairs, just with the same kind of animal. But really... if that would be the case, why would the rules say "different"? Would someone in their right mind claim victory with just one pair, saying they have three pairs by counting the same pair three times? "Different" must mean different animals.

I dont think different menas different animals, it means different pair, which means not the same one.
This is a bug.

Why would "different" have to be specified it it's not different animals? How on earth can three pairs not be different if you allow same animal? Even if the intent was to avoid a group of 3 counting as two pairs, they're still different pairs. I stand by my interpretation that the only reasonable meaning is different animals.

OK.
I forgot that this is casual game, so rules can be "loose".
With your pin from the game owner, it clarifies that you need 3 pairs of unique animal species to win.
