What real fixes would you like to see BGA deploy?

Post by Lotsa_Llamas »

I agree with others that some of the recent cosmetic changes are not only no necessary, but are distracting.

Meanwhile, I regularly spend 15 minutes trying to get into a RT table that actaully starts. That is a big time waster and would be my #1 reason to look for another board game platform in the future. That and service instability.

Why not just time-out/delete/cancel any tables that are stale (say 10 minutes old) and open for any players? And while you're at it, when the table host declines to start because they don't click start or just don't accept, don't promote the next player as host. Close the table. Often the next person in line isn't paying attention either. Its commical how difficult it is for a game of 6 nimmnt or Ticket to Ride to actually begin.

If you didn't keep so many neglected tables, wouold the servers be more stable (honest question from one IT person to another).

There's some issues that, at least to me, seem like low hanging fruit. I'd like to see some time spent going through bug reports and clearing them up or at least resolving them some other way.

Small example is the arena places - you'll sometimes see things like "31th place" which has been an issue on the site for 9 years

I doubt this will ever be a priority because there are only two suffixes designating all ordinal numbers in French (you can quibble about the whether -er and -re for the masculine and feminine version of -st is really the same), so they probably think it's perplexing and/or silly that English has four different ones.

A couple quality of life changes I'd like:
1) That the bug database will remember the state of the previous page when you hit "back" after reviewing a specific report. For example, if you look at something on page 3 of the results with items per page set to 50, then hit back, you end up back on page 1 with items per page set back to the default of 20.
2) The ability to get the forums to forget a game that you never play anymore if you leave the group for that game.

So, among your most pressing issue are:

The wrong 2-letter suffix is being used to indicate placement relative to others?

Uhh. WHat?

I mean okay.

Personally, I don't care whether someone finished in 31rd place or 31th place or 31st place.

Better replays. Make it easier to find a spot in the game and replay it. During turn-based games, make it easy and quick to show replays of your opponents' turns.

For at least some games, don't differentiate among non-winners. This is a common complaint in Hearts. No chicken stuff where someone plays for second to boost their Elo.

I agree. Some replays to catch up to current turn are just painful.

That's not my most pressing issue but a specific example. For big things I'd love to see many new features added to tournaments but that seems unlikely given that there are thousands of open site bugs some of which are years old despite being easy to fix. I think a priority should be made to fix these.

A button to show all reports for a game when I go to the bug reports area from a game so that I don't create a duplicate and/or so that I can review existing discussion to assess if I may have misunderstood something or if what I found is legit or to find a workaround.

There is already a button to see this AFTER submitting a report. All they need to do is enable it at the start too.

And no, the new extra submenus that you have to categorize with aren't helpful for this. It will only show reports that match all (2?) levels of categorization, plus match what you started typing as the title, so the results shown are going to be nil most of the time unless you and other players used similar terminology and categorized it identically, and you only typed in say one word. Maybe it sounded good on paper, but in practice it doesn't do any good.

I always have to back up a level, click a drop down, start typing the game name, hope the dropdown doesn't close on me while typing. Happens sometimes, not sure if a fat finger issue or a site issue. Then click search, or add a substring search if the results are too many.

It used to be simpler before the recent overhaul.

And on the tournaments area, remove the darn frame for standings and results that requires clicking buttons in all directions countless times to scroll inside that frame inside the overall window. Just display everything and let us scroll the normal window.

There are also so much wasted space with sections that maybe could be pushed to the bottom while more important things (like standings/results) are at or near the top. Tournament config and such might be good to have at the top before it starts but once going, can be pushed to the bottom.

And the font sizes are too large IMO and so much wasted space in general. This is a trend on a lot of sites and it irks me to see wherever a lot of data needs to be shown. Use of screen real estate is so inefficient. All I can guess is someone thought the new style was pretty, but it harms usability greatly, IMO.

For better replays. It's extremely unlikely based on replays simply being a series of notifications that update the game state 1 by 1. It's why when you select go to the "game end (fast)" it still needs to replay each move 1 by 1.

The highest priority should be:

Actually addressing site wide bugs and suggestions properly. For example, the recent 100+ page ELO debacle is really bad.

Make the site more stable. It's quite alarming how often it goes into meltdown.

The tournaments and arena need to be much more secure to encourage serious play. People joining tournaments only to abandon half their games is just atrocious experience for everyone else. Any kind of cheating in Arena, again needing a very high reputation.
So in short more measures for a better karma system.
