What do you think when someone puts "gg" into the chat before the game is over?

I generally never say “gg,” whether I’m winning or losing, and I don’t really like hearing it said to me, either.
I usually say, “Thanks for playing,” and sometimes I say it before the match is over (when it’s clear who the winner is), whether I’m winning or losing.

I look at it as bad sportsmanship if the person writes it long before the end of the game. That sounds more like a taunt. I have played against a few blokes like that and when they lose even after this then they just vent out their frustrations on chat.

It's funny to see this topic in the forum on this particular game because this is the only time this (a premature gg) has happened to me, outside of situations where the game is already decided and just pending a point tally/animation.

I recently discovered 7WD and thought I had a pretty good handle on it until I tried Arena and saw just how competitive it is! It was only my 4th or 5th turn (still early in Age 1) and my opponent said "gg". It was surprising but they were correct in assuming they were going to win (they won by science in Age 3 although I had come very close to a military victory a few turns prior).

They were 400+ ELO to my ~110. It quickly became clear to me that I was out of my element playing this game in Arena. I still enjoy the game. To be told "gg" this early seemed overly confident but I took it in stride and it really made me want to win that much more

Is a bit of a jerk move. Anyone who does it either has no real world experience with competitive events or is being cocky in my opinion. Even outside of sports, looking your opponent in the eye before the end of a game/match/etc and saying "good game" is poor sportsmanship. It's a statement said at the end of the game. I've been playing sports for decades, and there are subtle ways to be a jerk. That's one of them.

You are not being unreasonable. It is cocky and arrogant to say 'gg' before the game has even ended.

When the game is already over, saying 'gg' is a gesture of good sportsmanship.

People often confuse the two. You are normal for being upset about the former. I always wait until I've at least finished all of my turns for the game before I say 'gg'.

As soon as I know that the game can no longer be won or lost, I put "gg". Like that, if my opponent want to save time by quitting the game, or myself, it suits me. I also prefer to put it by respec, if the game is over. Let the opponent with hope isn't good for me.

got some input on that. gg in online games is mostly a (respectful) handshake in online games - this is not necessarily how it is meant by evryone, but for sure a way to interpret it. In contrast to gg ez which is a taunt.

In 2000 or so games there were three uses of gg by people before game end:
- no matter how it ends, it already was a good game (probably clearer when people write gg wp)
- I seem to have lost already at this point [often to complain about luck or to throw you off, by getting you overconfident]
- "It is clear, this is 100% over", on top of the normal gg meaning (people that are less good often enough misjudge that); my variant of this also states disappointment in the opponent that had a shot of winning but just threw it away with one move and made it a 100% win for me - OR just a statement of fact when the relevant cards were opened

mind you, my experience is only in realtime games.

It is a taunt or inconsiderate. I wish there was an option to disable chat entirely. Apparently you have to get banned to achieve that.
