Players leaving with no moves left to make

Post by kvetchyface »

I have no clue honestly what is supposed to happen in such a case, however...
we were playing a 4 player game of TM 2 players had already finished their moves after terraforming was completed and passed out of the game. Neither was able to place any greeneries after production.
before the remaining moves by the players still playing, 1 of those players quit... not even sure how the program knows this. I assume they just went offline...In any case, I and the other player continued till the end and lo and behold when it was over, we saw the game was cancelled , the quitting player recieved a large penalty but I, as winner got nearly nothing.
Honestly just confused... Their leaving had absolutely no effect on the game... their game was for all intents and purposes complete. Why did the site kill the game?
Can anyone shed light on this?
Thanks

Guessing you mean this game: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=875659171

"The player who left (or was skipped) lost the game and got a ☯ penalty.
The other players won this game and get 96% of normal ELO points (because 96% of this game was played before the incident)."

You all won because the system can't reliably tell who was going to win. It's hard to create a perfect system for what should happen when people abandon in 3p+ games

Also another reason you probably won't see 3p+ in Arena ever again.

Thanks for the reply.
That's the funny thing... the two players that left had completed all moves... they had no plants to place in production and if someone planted against one of their cities it would be easy to tally their points... win OR lose. Also the guy who left got a very hefty karma and fine hit... not really deserved if u consider he did not, in theory, effect the game in any way.
Also I walked away as the winner with 1 or 2 points... hardly 96% of what i would have gotten. I accept that no system is perfect and that it must be very difficult to run sites like this, but this seems like a built-in irregularity that shouldn't exist...
Am I wrong?

It may be easy to tell that you would have won that game. But what about other games? The system cannot reliably tell the outcome of every game, there are a ton of factors to include. You could argue the game should just continue after the person abandoned among the remaining players, but BGA doesn't do that. You absolutely could tell BGA that they should change their implementation, but I don't know how much luck you will have.

You can see why you only got 3 Elo if you mouse over your Elo in the results page I linked above. You tied against the other 2 (which would be a loss of Elo, since you were higher Elo to start with and the most likely to win) and won against the person who left. This resulted in +2.77 overall.

Everyone has their opinion; one of my opinions - this is why 3p+ on BGA is less fun. I only got a guru vote one season; my vote is for arena to be 2p to avoid this situation, and many other related ones..

I was always sad that once an arena game becomes 2P it never ever moves away from it; 3P arena was fun—we don't need two leaderboards that do exactly the same (as only the 2P crowd will be at the top consistently). Alas, as games with 3+ players have this inherent problem of being unfair towards everyone involved once someone drops out, this—indeed—is a killing argument against ever having this format in arena ever again.

When I was playing 3p games I'd regularly score 0 elo when anyone left(can't give elo loss to a game winner). I think the site has that kinda implemented for the highest elo "winner", because otherwise you could play with your friend as a failsafe for whenever you wouldn't win and have them quit, so your elo still grows a tiny bit, but as the highest elo winner it is almost always gonna be +0 due to drawing everyone else.
