I would hate this option and never use it but if a large amount of people don't want it I think it would be fine to add as an option. I also don't like the first edition rules for fields and never use it but it is there for some people to use.

I'd love this option too!

To those of you saying it would be a worse game, good news! You could leave them turned on!

Win win.

Yeah, I always thought Abbot was with River expansion..

Abbot is also the only Meepit you can remove off a garden/church before there are 8; squares surrounding it, right?

I love the combo of no fields and strategy (3 tiles at a time)

Fields are a crucial component of the game. What exactly is the objection?

So? Then the ppl who like fields play with them but at least we would have an option. I would also like to turn it off. And have the Abott as well for gardens.

Fields are a core component of the game. The game designer is unlikely to give permission for the option to remove them.

Regarding options: The more options created, the more different ways there are to play, and that might not be a good thing. For N options, this creates 2^N different game settings. Some games might have 6 different things various players would like the option to turn on or off. Then there would be [Whoops. 64] ways to play, possibly causing confusion and possibly making it more difficult for people to start or join games.

As it is now, there are several popular games for which I never see a game hosted with the settings I like. Contrast this with a game like Connect6, which despite being far far less popular, almost always has an open game hosted without issues of unappealing settings.

Another game, Pente, suffers from this. There are so many options (some of them silly nonsense in my opinion) that any particular game setting has a low probability of being joined. One of the settings is to disable the win by captures, which is so bizarre and puzzling, it would be akin to having an option in chess where pawns cannot be promoted when reaching the final rank.

2^6=64, but yeah.

To add to that, more options mean more work for people to put it on BGA, deal with bugs, for people to turn off if they don't want to play that setting. It gives players another setting to try and target new/unfamiliar players and avoid having real games.
