All it takes is the person after you in turn order to also be slow, but not the "most negative". Unless you're constantly checking the site to see if it happens to be the "most negative" player's turn yet you could easily miss it. Notifications will tell you when it's your turn, they won't tell you when it's the turn of a player you can eject.

I just noticed that our profiles have lots of similarities (country, account age, high forum post to games played ratio). Are you saying that we differ in the "constantly checking the site" aspect? :)

I check when I'm bored at work, but even recently I had a 4 player game where one of the players was a couple of hours over time and it happened to be occurring overnight while I was asleep. Everyone else was playing within the turn times (it was a slow table, 2 moves per day) and even then I just happened to not be on when it happened to be the turn of the player who was in the red. I can't imagine how frustrated I would be if another player was also in the red, but I couldn't boot them (allowing me to leave the table) because they weren't as negative as the first player.

What if the change was implemented in such a way, that when you tried to skip someone with a smaller negative time, it offered you the chance to skip the player with the most negative time instead?

If I'm at a table with multiple players in the red I just want to be able to leave the table and find a new one. I don't really care who technically gets skipped.

Personally I think karma penalties should be applied once a player runs out of time, regardless of if they are skipped, and any table that isn't real time should allow skipping any player in the red, not just the player whose turn it is.

I recognize these preferences only make sense in non-tournment turn based games as tournaments have their own weird clock issues, and this thread was about tournaments so I am straying off topic here.

I find it hard to take the defense of a player who not only grabbed an unfair win, but also wasted everyone's time and gave their opponent false hope by making it look like they were going to let them play till the end.
Yeah well I didn't take the defense and you have cut off my post right after I said that. I am just saying it is an acceptable consequence to accept in our lives that ** will be **. I don't want reality to be built around them when they are easy enough to avoid. Your suggested solution would make friendly people play by the rules of a few ** that most of the time are not present at the table.

Personally, I want to be able to expel multiple players if they're all in negative time: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=67333

Then again, their behavior doesn't impact the game's result. If they don't play, they'll eventually lose once the game reaches its maximum duration, which is their problem. And if they play, then you both get the chance of reaching a regular outcome for the game.

So I'm not sure how that's "playing by their rules", except in the sense that you may find it annoying to wait for them (though they probably aren't doing it on purpose, and if they do that's reportable, although hard to prove I suppose).

One small change that could be made is to only allow the player with the most negative time to be skipped.
So I'm in a game with 3 other people. I'm within my time clock but every other player has exceeded their time. However, I don't happen to be on-line when it's the "most negative" player's turn so I'm stuck until the current player exceeds them?
That does sound like a valid concern. In fact, it could even arise when that player is the only one out of time. My initial thought was that it should be possible to expel an overtime person even if it is not their turn. I guess the system would schedule an expulsion and then wait until it is their turn (and they are still overtime) before actually expelling them.

I do wonder how often your situation would actually arise. How does a person get to be the "most negative", while you still have a positive amount on your clock, yet you are never online when it's their turn?
I don't understand what is the issue you are talking about. If it's not the turn of the most out of time player, then they aren't currently stalling the game. You just have to wait for their turn to come up again, and if they are still wasting everyone's time, you can kick them then. And if you weren't online and they already made their move, then it means they played after all, and so the cycle repeats. At no point you are "stuck".

That seems like a bit of a catch 22. If you aren't even invested enough to notice when it's this player's turn and the time they're taking to play doesn't seem to have any real effect on you, then how is it an issue that you didn't manage to catch them when it was their turn? It sounds like a nothingburger.
