I think there should be a category in reporting where one could tag player as time bully. It is quite often a strategy of players (at least Catan cities) where, when they do not win, they bully players on time - it is sometimes really just a matter of seconds when in complex turns, that people kick people out in the midst of move… start by pushing and just keep klicking expell…
Is that not a way to gain rank irregularly?
Idk, you agreed to play within a given timeframe, violated that agreement, and are complaining about other players having an issue with it? That seems more like time bullying to me. BGA has given very one a tool to expel those time bullies from the game and apply an additional rating and karma penalty to discourage them from doing it again. They can choose not to use it if everyone agrees that the player going over time was ok for now, but that's still only at everyone's discretion.
Several counter arguments.
Bga gives a 20 sec grace period after running out of time. You can argue this shouldn’t even exist. But it does. So players feel entitled to that 20 seconds and if someone is spamming the expel button then one can argue they were stripped of their right to the extra 20 seconds.
Particularly in catan your opponents can use your clock on THEIR turn by offering continuous trades that you must then act upon. But you didn’t create this action so this aspect is weird and game specific.
Bga has one universal clock mechanic for all 1400 games. But as you can see having a clock that gives the same amount of time on the first move as it does in the last move for games that have increased difficulty as they progress is problematic.
Overall I think bga gives too much time across the board. But there are issues as it pertains to this topic.
If someone is repeatedly going over time and the expel option is getting smaller, a player can claim they're "entitled" to the 20 seconds all they like, it existed initially, and now it doesn't. The same argument to be made that they have it can also be made to take it away.
The matter of continuous trades is going to come down to context. I read the continuous expels as "they keep trying to expel me on my turn", though if it's a matter of someone offering absurd trades over and over as some form of Catan specific clock manipulation to try and shoot down time, that's a different matter. I believe there are countermeasures to help deal with that, like certain buttons to help ignore trade offers when dealing with absurd stunts, but you'd have to check the Catan forums to confirm. That sort of thing might have a case for bug manipulation, but again, that's probably a topic for the Catan forums to verify the details on how this works.
I agree there are games that should have different clock rules to account for specific factors in that game.
