Conceding is Not a Crime

Post by Jaxom »

There is a difference between rage quitting and conceding when all hope is lost.

There wouldn't be two different options if it was otherwise.

I play a ton of games while procrastinating at the office. I don't want to wait around to lose. I want to get to the next one where I might stand a chance.

If it is close and there is still a possibility of a win, I won't quit.

If I am 100 points behind in Seasons, I am not going to waist an additional five minutes just so you can aim for a high score while I dwell in misery unable to do a thing.

Conceding, or throwing in the proverbial towel, should not be grounds for a red thumb. I have received a ton of them conceding.

I am sick of it! Remember my name and don't play me if you think I am wrong.

I would generally agree with you and personally don't have a problem with conceding. One thing that I've found useful is to just mention in the chat your reason for quitting. "Thanks for the game! I'm so far behind it would be a waste of both of our time to finish. Thanks for the game." or whatever.

Some games are better suited for conceding than others. In Quoridor, the final 10-15 moves are often just a foregone conclusion and the game is already decided with no chance of changing the outcome. I don't mind conceding in that scenario.

I agree with 1.732. Please give a reason for conceding. It doesn't matter if the other player speaks your language or not, that's why the chat is linked to Google Translate. But, to be playing along, and suddenly have the game be over with no explanation can be frustrating. The other player may not realize they are significantly ahead.

I also agree with Jaxom that conceding is a good option, as there are some games where at some point it is impossible to win, and playing it out is just a waste of time.

I have you green thumbed, Jaxom. That being said, there is also a difference between conceding in a two player game, where your action gives the other player a win and you a loss, and conceding (quitting) in a 3+ player game, where your action may very well affect the available actions and interaction of the other players.

I always assume that if the game doesn't give me a concede option (like several two player strategy games) or a quit with honor option (like Through the Ages) then I need to seek the approval of other players or at least notify them of my intentions, while ensuring that my actions don't throw a multiple player game out of balance. There have been a few Through the Ages games that I'd have like to quit but I stayed in and finished to maintain stability for the other players.

Actually Through The Ages is a good example of a game where you shouldn't concede (on BGA I mean) : the rules allow you to quit the game and let the other players finish, but on BGA if you quit the game is over for everyone. I didn't know that and conceded a game ; I was so sorry to realize what I had done, that I had to PM all the other players to apologize (and neither gave me a red thumb).

This is just another inherent flaw in the system, you get no choice but to delete your account and make another one. They spend all this time making improvements that only make the site suck more.

For heaven´s sake, IT IS A CRIME TO MY SOUL. I played two rounds of seasons today, both quitting like 1 minute before the end, because I was having a good move. Without saying anything.

Seriously, do you guys play boardgames with your friends at the evening and can´t handle it, but just stand up and leave during the game, cause you feel so so sooooo bad about loosing?
What kind of people just leave without saying anything? For me, playing a game is real good to let the time pass, I don´t even feel bad, when I can see my defeat coming, cause I still can learn something from the guy, I´m playing with! There is no winner without a looser.

TO ALL CONCEDERS, PLEASE OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND TELL ME, IF YOU WANNA GO. AND WAIT, TILL I ANSWER, AFTER THIS SMALL COMMUNICATION BASICS, PLEASE DO, WHAT PLEASES YOU.
EVERY BAST***, THAT WON´T DO SO, WILL GET A RED THUMB FROM ME.

It would be so nice, if there was an option to show up at the table, if you like or dislike conceders.

Greetings,
Dasom

Ok many things about that (always the same)
This thread (and others with same theme) is useful. It is said than concede and quit is not the same, and then, people here continue to say “please don’t quit” instead of “please don’t concede”. It shows how deeply the confusion exists in players’ mind.

Of course, all of you who say than concede is better with explicative words are right. It is rude to end a game withtout saying anything.
But believe me, that’s an excuse. I ALWAYS explain why I concede, I never do it without a word but even so, I received a great mass of red thumbs for that.

So yes, the question of this thread is pertinent: please, don’t treat concede players like quitting players (which earn a red thumb when they do it for bad reason)

Concede register the result of the game, it means “ok, good game, you were too strong for me on this one, let’s spare time for other games”.

Quitting means “aaaaaaah, I lose, I don”t want, I’m angry, aaaah, grrrr!”

You see the huge difference?

By the way, we only speak here of 2 players games, because this is the ONLY configuration where concede link is activable.

And yes, in real life, I concede too, without anger. In chess for example, it happens all the time…
