if the idea is to reward engagement and daily visits to the site, then you should also consider putting an option for notifications(if users want to enable it). You can perhaps even put a counter on the News like you do for announcements.

for each of the previous events, I have been visiting the site daily but would always forget 1 day or another to go on the home page to click on the treasure chest instead of the lobby where i usually default to. I am sure there are others like me.

For reasons unknown, they made 2 forum posts. The announcement post links this other post which actually has the calendar location picture:

But if you only read the announcement post with "The full game list will be updated regularly in this forum post", you might not realize you needed to still click that post to know where the calendar is.

They've done this before. DrClick tried to rationalize why this makes sense above, but sorry, no, it doesn't make sense.
