ELO changes for Semi-Coop games suggestion

Post by Ch3rryPL »

Hi,
this post is based currently on Nemesis: Retaliation in Beta status if other Semi-Coop games behaves differently, then please let me know.

What I observe currently, is when all player wins or all players lose, it is considered a Tie with minimal ELO changes.

This causes Toxic behaviour - if I want to climb in ranks, I should not only play to win, but also make someone else to lose (ruining their experience).

Nemesis: Retaliation win conditions in Semi-Coop variant is to win, Player need to Survive and complete his individual objectives. Results of other players surviving or completing their objective does not improve your score according to the game rules.

What I see as draft of Solution is to introduce 5 states of End Game results vs other Players:
1) Win - Normal ELO increase
2) Win-tied - Reduced ELO increase (~20%-30%)
3) Tie - current behaviour (it would never happen in Nemesis: Retaliation - but may happen in other games)
4) Lose-tied - Reduced ELO decrease (~20%-30%)
5) Lose - Normal ELO decrease

Above change will make me focus on winning in Semi-Coop, not on making other players lose.

This would allow Nemesis: Retaliation to be succesfull Arena Game in the future. Hoping for the same for other semi-coop games.

EDIT: Seems like this is related to one of the most voted suggestion on BGA https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=11297 ;)

This is example what happened on table https://boardgamearena.com/tableview?table=894295494
I won the game and calculations made me lose ELO, because other player also won.
Objective of this game is only to win (survive and complete individual goal), not make others lose.

Yes you are 100% correct, players are deliberately over playing betrayal to earn ELO, its basically at a point where anyone over 200ELO can be assumed to be a traitor before the game even starts.

Personally I totally ignore ELO and play to personally win regardless of other peoples win or loss, essentially my win/loss is what I consider my ranking, as for ELO, I will let the players who consistently pursue that ride the red thumb bus.

Nemesis on BGA is supposed to follow the actual games rules, its an interesting case because its an incentive based game at its core and the BGA ranking system adds an alternative incentive which I consider to be against the rules of the game. Essentially I consider players who pursue ELO to be cheating in a weird way, they are breaking the game by playing to an incentive structure that is not part of the games rules.

Now you may argue it is part of BGA's rules, fine, go play with someone else, I want to play the actual game.

Another great result in Nemesis Retaliation, when all Players won, resulted in 0 Elo change.
This is after they implemented hot-fix that you at least don't lose points for winning the game. :)

It needs to be fixed, before releasing Arena Mode, and this is such a great game for Arena Mode.
