Nucleum: Ohm Alone

Post by DrClick »

A generation ago, Elsa von Frühlingfeld presented her invention to King Frederik Augustus II of Saxony: a process she called “atomization”. Her device, the Nucleum, ushered in a new era of energy and prosperity over the next decades.

You take on the role of an industrialist trying to succeed during the economic and technological boom of 19th-century Saxony, fueled by the invention and spread of the Nucleum (which people of another century, and a different timeline, would call a nuclear reactor) and its immense power generating capabilities.

In this heavy Euro board game, on your turn, you must do one of the following:

Play an Action tile: this allows you to resolve actions and fulfill a Contract. Place the tile on the leftmost empty space at the top of your player board, then resolve both actions depicted on the tile, in any order. Any action can be skipped, nothing is mandatory. You can Urbanize, Industrialize, Develop, Contract and Energize.

Place a Railway: select any empty railway space on the map that is adjacent to a city and/or railway, place the tile on it face up in any direction, and place one of your Workers on it. Note that if you don’t have a worker, you can’t choose this action.

Recharge: gain income, advance a Milestone marker, and pull all your played tiles back off your player board so you can reuse them.

The game ends once two of five conditions are met (three in a 2-player game) and victory goes to the one with the most VP. You earn victory points by putting up Urban Buildings, powering them up with electricity, completing Contracts, and hitting milestones dictated by King Frederik Augustus II.

Build railways, mine uranium, and power a booming steampunk city in Nucleum and find that spark that wins you the game.

Big thanks to Dávid Turczi and Simone Luciani, the game designers, and the Board&Dice team, for letting us plug their creation into the platform's mainframe. And thanks to Ginso for rewiring the circuits and getting Nucleum running clean on BGA.

This was your Monday release.
Power up. Plug in. Take Care and play fair…

I'm really happy to see this released on BGA! I've played it quite a bit in alpha and beta (and in person), so I'm glad to now have access to all features. I hope gurus will vote for 3p games for next Arena season though, 2p feels a bit less interesting, but we'll see what happens.

Great news! Not an easy task to get such a game digitally implemented. I have enjoyed this a lot playing my physical copy, and I'm sure I'll also enjoy it digitally. As I already did in the alpha.

It's called ohm alone and you couldn't include the solo mode?

I think this was in Alpha way too long, and should have been moved to Beta sooner. Beta period seemed about right.
In any case, I am glad it is released and proud to have played a VERY small part in that.

Wish solo mode was added, but maybe it is too much to program?

I would like to acknowledge the excellent pun of ‘Ohm alone’! I particularly appreciate it since seven days without puns makes one week.
