Any way to play Arena and/or non-Arena games?

Heya, I prefer to play Arena, but in many cases I'm happy to just get a game. I'm not exactly sure how the underlying mechanics work, but when I'm struggling for a match I will alternate between Play and Arena modes. Are those queues totally separate?
