How do tournaments with group stages work? (The final stage)

Post by Consolas »

Hello everyone

I'm going to create the first tournament for a project I'm running and wanted to have a group stage tourbament where the top players in each group would qualify for a bracket like stage.

I was checking the tournaments and there are two options that I like:

- elimination (brackets)
- group stage

Now the group stage seems to be groups + a final group for the winners.

Was trying to read this better cause the description is not very specific

Does anyone have any info on this?

I know I can create groups and close it after the top positions are close and start a new tournament with brackets - would like to do everything in one go.

Thank you everyone!

It doesn't have to be that way. You could have the groups feed into a bracket like in the World Cup. That's the structure I prefer. I have two groups and the top three of each group qualify for a bracket. The winner of each group gets a bye in the first round of the bracket, so there's something to play for during the first stage even if only the minimum number of players needed for the bracket sign up.

But you could have the second stage be a round robin or Swiss if you want.

By the way, there is a forum specifically for Tournaments where we usually discuss these things.

If you follow the Tournament’s creation process, you should have tooltips explaining the different possibilities.
You should even have recommendations based on the game and the number of participants.

The dedicated forum, as mentioned above is most likely the best place to get the most accurate answers to your questions about tournaments.

Group stage will split the tournament into two phases, you can choose the type of tournament (multiplayer elimination etc.) for each phase. Note you cannot edit player accounts as different for different phases. You set the structure for the first phases, number of groups, number of players to qualify from each group, ie. the number of players advancing to phase 2 will be equal to the number of groups x the number of players you set to qualify from each group. It will then follow whatever rules you set for phase 1 to get to that point, swiss system is easy, the top x will qualify. Elimination can work, but you have to make sure your numbers work or it will turn into a mess with skipped players all over the place. The easy way is say you have 4 player tables, set to 2 players to qualify each round, and 2 players to qualify from each group, this will work.

And whatever you do, do not under estimate your clock for each round. The easiest way to kill a tournament immediately is to set the rounds to a clock that will never work. Either look what others are doing (and working), or speak to others in your community for the game, and they should know.

Hello everyone!

I'm sorry to just return here today but I didn't get and notification.

Thank you so much for your help! I will look into the tournaments section but I'm very happy to know it can be groups to brackets.

That is awesome for the project I'm launching.

Thank you so much!
