Asking for turn based

Post by caz_manc »

I had to get an penlty on quite a number of occasions in the last yesr. I politly asked via text to go turn based, sometimes as people turned up unexpected or the game was taking too long. I then after a min hoping they read my text go to the request to ask for turn based.

I would say that in 90% of games people have refused and i just had to quit which is a huge loss on my repution and was a pain for the other players too.

Why do people not accept moving to turn based?

Because they don't want to play turn-based, that's why they joined a real-time game? Or they can play now, but not tomorrow.

Some games are really painful (or broken) in turn-based mode: lots of actions/reactions, bids and counterbids, trick-taking games...

If you're not sure of your timing to finish a RT game, maybe start with a TB one? If your response to that is that you'd prefer to play RT, then you should probably understand those who join your RT game because they don't want to play TB, and as their situation has not changed, they also don't then want to switch to TB halfway through.

If they aren't someone who cares about getting a win the "proper" way, then telling them that you want to switch to turn based is just telling them that you are allowing them to grab a free win against you. They just need to wait for you to either quit or for your real time clock to expire and then kick you out. I don't agree with it, but if it's something they are willing to do, they don't really have a reason not to do it.

I think turn-based is awful. I came to play real-time, not play a game where the time between turns can e longer than the entire game should be.

This sounds like a lesson you're not picking up on ...

You are aware you can just start your games in turn-based mode in the first place?

That seems like a better plan than starting it in real time and expecting people to switch because someone turned up unexpectedly.

Also - "the game was taking too long" ... so you want to switch it to turn based? I'm confused.

They mean they are down to make it turn based so they can make their moves whenever they have time, but they currently can't or aren't in the mood for waiting between every move.

Thanks for all these messags and can understand your point of view.

My point though is things happen. You starr a game knowing you have at keast 45 mins for a game which usually lasts 15 mins. And either a friend turns up unexpected, you get an urgent phone call, insert here, things do happen. Or the game takes longer than 45 mins, these things happen. We cant control everything in life.

I just think instead of binning of a game go to turn based to finish it, it just seems like a fairer way to go for all players.

If your life has that many interruptions that you truly cannot ignore, then perhaps RT is not for you. Or you need to wait for times when you know you'll be uninterrupted for longer than you are currently estimating.

If a friend comes by, ask them to wait for a few minutes, or chat while you play. They interrupted you in your example, no reason other players should suffer.

Phone/text/chat, let it go to voice mail / delay a response, or tell the person that you'll call them back, or quickly chat while you play, or ask the other players if they could forgo booting you because you need 5 minutes for a true, true emergency. And make sure you do not abuse this.

Don't play if you are expecting an urgent call.

etc.

And finally if it's something like a death in the family, fire, injury, then take the small karma hit and rebuild later, which isn't hard. And these hopefully are super rare, but I don't know your situation of course.
