Finding a new game

Post by andersid86 »

Hey,
I would like to try some different games. Therefore, I wonder if it is possible to search for games based on game information. I want to find a game that is very strategic, not based on a lot of luck, and preferably not very complicated. Alternatively, if someone knows of such a game that they would like to recommend?

Under the "Games" tab you can filter games by different criteria. While you can't filter for luck/strategie specifically, I think you can still get recommendations that suit you using the complexity and mechanism filters.

I suggest filtering games with Theme "Abstract". That should give you many options with low or no luck.

The best games for this are going to be 2 player of course. Abstract games tend to win out here, Boop, Reversi, Connect Four, Kalah, Hive etc. though many struggle with not being popular on BGA. Outside of BGA you have staples like Chess, Go, etc.

You may have more success looking at popular 2 player games with high top ratings filling the top 100 chart. This tends to indicate the game is both popular and skillful enough for players to reach higher numbers. Azul, Patchwork, Splendor, etc. There may be more luck than the previous group, but not enough to stop the better player from winning much more often.

Look for short or medium Iength games. Trial and error. Look at the stats they give for strategy and luck. Go from there. At least 100 to choose from

Look into Chicago Express.

It would be great off we could search by the game attributes (which include luck), but they aren't properly grade anyway.

This was widely discussed here: https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=30423

As for the searchng, there are already about a dozen suggestion reports for this. You can start looking and voting for them here: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=46942
