Hello. I'm not sure about the thumb down cause I've got one after making a random mistake. The other player was disappointed and marked me although I didn't do anything rude.

One downvote does almost nothing, so don't worry about it.
However, if someone is very annoying and receives many downvotes, they will receive a significant karma penalty.
And the more penalties they incur, the more significant they are.

Did you observe this recently? Because I thought they removed that effect and thumbs can't affect your Karma anymore.

Oh, OK. No, I didn't do it recently. You might be right, then!

grrandpacool wrote: 26 August 2025, 15:28 Hello,
I am writing to express my deep disappointment and concern about the current player environment in the game Hanabi.

I have been a long-time user and have always appreciated the service BGA provides. Hanabi is a game I love for its unique requirement of cooperation, communication, and trust. Unfortunately, my recent experiences have made it increasingly difficult to enjoy.

I have encountered a growing trend of highly negative and intolerant behavior from other players. The spirit of a cooperative game seems to be overshadowed by an intense focus on winning at all costs. Instances of this include:

1.Receiving hostile responses in the chat (e.g., spamming "?" or "?????") for making an honest mistake.
2.Experiencing zero tolerance for any error, which is against the very nature of a game about imperfect information.
3.In the most extreme cases, after a mistake, other players have deliberately thrown the game by playing known wrong cards to end the game immediately as a form of punishment.
4.In other cases, receiving direct insults from teammates.

Perhaps the most discouraging example was when I was playing a game explicitly set to "Friendly" mode. I made a mistake, and my partner reacted with intense anger, completely contradicting the spirit of the mode we had selected.

This type of conduct is not only rude but fundamentally breaks the cooperative spirit of Hanabi. What should be a fun often turns into a stressful and unpleasant event. The act of deliberately losing to punish a teammate is especially toxic and violates the basic principles of good sportsmanship.

I understand that Hanabi attracts players who enjoy deep strategy, and that's a great thing. However, the current vibe in many games feels toxic and unwelcoming to all but the most elite players.

I am writing in the hope that you might consider ways to better promote sportsmanship and a positive community in Hanabi.

Thank you for your time and for building a platform that has brought me so much joy. I hope this feedback is helpful in making BGA a welcoming place for all types of players.

Sincerely,

grrandpacool
Tried out the BGA version of Hanabi for a little bit after getting the chance to play it in real life, and honestly that sounds like my experience too. Between getting flamed because of a mistake or because I'm not yet in tune with the meta, games getting thrown on purpose, and getting tables cancelled on sight because of my rating, I've had a very discouraging experience and the toxicity is real. How am I supposed to learn and build my rating with this negative community?

A year ago I tried Hanabi. two games and both games people were so rude that I avoided playing for over a year. I tried playing again. initially had good experience with maybe a negative person as noted in above post few times in 20 games. In my last 20 games there has been somebody rude to me or other players in more than 50% of games. That is really sad. With all the complaints here could they not put announcement on hanabi page about the refraining from this behavior to emphasize it. These people that are rude like that usually cause more mistakes to be made because the victims of their rudeness are distracted. I have played maybe 40 -50 other board games here and have never encountered this type of behavior on any other game. the last game i played i accidentally clicked on play instead of discard and the other player requested to quit. Game was still winnable. The discard was not critical card. then he randomly played his next three plays to grief quit. I really enjoy playing Hanabi so much i will probably keep playing at this time. I reported the guy. First time ever have reported someone. I guess it might just take everyone who dislikes this behavior reporting these people so it cleans up the game so people can have fun consistently when they play. I have found if you talk about misfires to lower ranked players in kind way they are eager and want to learn.

Reporting becomes easier when you did it a few times ;). Hanabi is a great game - but yeah the approach is not all friendly. I've been guilty of being rude at times too. When I was reported that reminded me well to try harder to be nice so seems to me reporting is generally worth it. Even if just for a reminder without a real punishment.

Master player have no incitive or penalties to ruin a game when they want to. Neg behavior and random playing is a pain are killing the game.

Elo system needs to impact that kind of playing as for several months nor years it gets worst.

A coop game is just not strategy, maths or conventions... Social communication is also the main part of this game

I agree. I love this game, but after negative experiences on here playing with the BGA community, I'm nervous to go back. I'll just have to keep this game for friends and not play it as often. It sucks cuz I was looking forward to playing this game more. I thought the point of games was to have fun...
