What's up with lack of manners?

Post by ZooCreeper »

Maybe it is my age showing (was born in the 90s) but what's up with people not saying "gg" after the game? In the past it was customary to say "gg" at the end of the game/match whether you won or lost. It is a form of a digital handshake that is supposed to release the tension. Right now, more than half the players I play against don't respond at all.

It might be those players don't know english or don't know what you mean by "gg". In the game chat, you could use the pre-written "Thank you for the game" instead, which is translated into each language.

I think it's also the way that BGG handles the game end. If you are not the player that played the final turn, then the game result will simply pop up once you open the main page and you're not directed back to the game screen. That way the game end is just something that happens automatically as a notification and people who play many games simultaneously are not likely to go back to the game to engage with the chat.

I would prefer (for most games, not just Ark Nova) if you were required to go back to the game and the game result and final turn would stay hidden until then. That would make the final scoring more exciting and also gives you an opportunity to write "gg". But I don't think BGA is going to change that.

Yeah, I know what you are talking about and I also belong to the non-GG-people sometimes.
AN is one of the few, or maybe THE only one, of games that gives me so much frustration I sometimes forget my manners. Sorry for that to all out there! Especially when it feels that everything plays out the way my opponent needs. Then the digital "thing" happens. I get frustrated, it feels like cheating if all the cards come out that are fitting so perfect for them. This feeling for me gets less if there is a converstion at the table so it feel human. Otherwise I often get the feeling playing against some bot.
And then I concede and mostly without GG. I will try to work on my manners! :)

I think it also depends on how you started the game. Did you say hello (or use the pre-written texts for non-english speaking people) at the beginning?

To me, gg feels so superficial, meaningless, low effort. I’d feel so phony using it. I will sometimes say something a little more elaborate if the mood strikes me, or if we’ve been chatting already, or the game was noteworthy in some way.

Whether people say or don’t say anything, gg or otherwise, doesn’t matter to me.

Just one opinion.

Same here.

If I win or lose with a big margin, it feels arrogant to say it. Sometimes the turn based game ended last night as I played my final turn before going to sleep and we're 8h later, opp didnt say it... feels irrelevant. Etc.

So it's not something I do automatically, and I dont feel anything if not said by my opponent.

I don't say gg if the game is one sided or was won due to luck. I pretty much only say GG if the game was close and it felt like a genuine competitive game.

I never know we should say GG or opening conversation with other players in BGA. I think the lack of mannerism is when people concede the game when someone about to win.
