Games that work best on Mobile

Post by kwharvey »

Hello everyone!! I was just wondering what are some games in here that translate well to the mobile version of this site. My group is mainly looking for low interaction games that we can play through over multiple days. We typically play games like wingspan/wyrmspan, apiary, terraforming mars, and Everdell when we can all play simultaneously.

Any thoughts from the community?

This is starting to get frustrating. This same question was asked on the FIRST PAGE of the sub-forum you just posted on, and the response was links to previous times it has been asked. Did you even try searching first?

Good to play on mobile phone?

Wingspan used to work fine on mobile (I wouldn't say well — there's a lot going on and thus a lot of zooming in and out required). A recent change, circa mid-July, seems to have broken this by causing the game to crash whenever zoomed in too much.

I've submitted a bug report about this: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=235798

I haven't tried other games so I can't speak to that. With Wingspan, it isn't that there is a separate mobile interface; it's the same as the desktop interface, and seems to have been designed with only a large full screen in mind. BGA is an excellent platform for playing Wingspan, however, particularly over multiple days with a relaxed time control (in my experience).

While I agree that it would be nice if people could try the search box before posting a new thread on the same topic, I don't see any threads in the first page of topics in the Discussions forum. The two threads you've linked had last postings in 2025 and 2024 respectively, so I can't see that they would be that high in the list of topics - am I missing something?

But yes, search is your friend. If you really care what the community thinks, then try seeing what they've already suggested (and if they haven't, then feel free to create a new topic). The same applies when you have a problem - chances are, your question may have been answered before, so try searching first! You'll get your answer straight away, so it's a win-win!

Ah, fair. I usually think mobile as phone, since I find the experience on my tablet not hugely different from on a PC, so I missed the word tablet in that thread.

And hey, I'm with you - I feel like there's been an uptick in multiple threads on the same topic lately. You might have seen the thread about turning on bell notifications where I linked 5 questions on the same topic, only to have someone ask about turning them off, leading to me posting 5 questions about THAT. I don't get why you wouldn't search first. And it's not like it's hard to know what to search for - I'm pretty sure I found both of those by searching for the word "bell".

There are some spaces in which the culture requires you to 1) state what you're looking for, 2) state what you did you try to find the answer yourself, and lastly 3) ask for help bridging the gap between what you found at step 2 and what you still need from step 1. There seem to be fewer and fewer of these spaces as time goes on.

I'd group not reading pinned posts that literally say "read this first" and not looking at an FAQ for answers first among similar behaviors.

Yea I did search and honestly most of them didn’t answer well, the search didn’t yield, or were old enough that more games have been added in that meantime. So thank you to the one that DID answer and those that aren’t irritable. In the time it took for you to moan about me asking it you could just NOT answered or given a response or even reported the post. I don’t really care which of those you chose but thank you for your response regardless.

And again for those that just got stuck in the first sentence I wasn’t merely asking for “games that play on mobile” I was also throwing in the caveat of asynchronous, turn based, and maybe medium weight. That would be why I included the games we HAVE played, some that aren’t in BGA, so there could be recommendations for similar games. So even if this question has been answered I was looking for more pointed answers to a more specific question.

A more specific question you merely alluded to by listing a few games instead of actually stating what you wanted and meant…

Regardless, I think you’ll find it comes down to a matter of taste. Most games are playable on tablets; the two big caveats are:
  • real estate usage—a game like Terraforming Mars that has a big board and significant tableaus for each player may be unwieldy for you, though I can vouch it does work on tablet, and
  • tooltips—some games rely heavily on tooltips/popups to convey information, and it can be a little hit or miss to trigger them on a tablet. Mostly you can trigger popups with a quick tap immediately followed by a longer press (if you know Morse code, think of the letter A), but in some games it can be finicky and in some games it just plain doesn’t work. And this may be something that varies from tablet to tablet or browser to browser, which means I am hesitant to make any specific recommendations.
But if you at least bear these two caveats in mind I think they should serve you well. In any game you are interested in, you should be able to check both of these out quickly by looking at a replay and seeing whether it works for you. I’ve done a lot of BGA on my iPad, and it’s definitely doable.
