Just a bewildering implementation on bidding. I bid 11 (my highest bid) on a faction, but lost it to someone else with a max bid of 6 (their actual winning bid was only 3!), because I bid 8 on a second faction.
What…?
Yes, there is apparently a mathematical process that leads to outcomes like this. It is not intuitive to what most people have experienced in bidding, but that is their problem.

My first recommendation on bidding is: avoid it. Barring that, do not have a second choice. There’s a good chance you’ll end up with that second choice and end up discounting your opponent’s bid in the bargain.

That's a fair take. It's definitely not for everyone and, yes, a little esoteric.

Understandably, it's difficult for an automated system to allow bidders to automatically switch their target when the bid gets too high. That's what this system allows, with the clear disadvantage that it's less intuitive.

I agree with both recommendations: Avoid it if it's not for you. If you're determined to get a single faction, only bid on that faction (or maybe bid just 1 on your second pick).
