New to the site. Game suggestions?

Post by The4thDr »

Just signed up and I am looking for a suggestion for a game to try. I've never heard of any of these games but I'm definitely willing to try some.

"Can't stop" can be a easy and quick introduction to the site.
"Stone Age" is a quite accessible worker placement game that appeals to many people

As for this question, I'm up for almost any type of game. I never had a group of friends that was into board games. We played a bunch of different genres of RPGs but only a couple of board games. I was the one who wanted the change of play. But that was 20 years ago. What I'm looking for I guess are games with strategy more than luck maybe even some diplomacy or player interaction/trades involved.

i put it in the 2d category because you can't readily block someone else's strategy effectively without messing up your own strategy. my opinion, of course ;)

but i just used that as a distinguishing feature since the OP was interested in games with player interaction. as my boardgame buddies will readily attest, much of my favourite gameplay is griefing the other players ... and all the games listed in my first category allow for that in spades ;)

I definitely like the griefing part of games especially if the people are good friends. ;-) But thanks for the list of suggestions. I'm not going to try out too many at one time but I will eventually give a lot of the games on this site a tryout. :ugeek: :geek:

There's a lot of strategy games with no (or really little) luck on the site.
If you check the panel of each game on the site like i.e.
http://en.boardgamearena.com/#!gamepane ... puertorico
you'll see a recap of the game with minimum and maximum number of players, average game duration, and grades from 1 to 5 about complexity, strategy, luck and interaction between players. Don't take them as The Truth, but they are a good guide.

If you wanna avoid luck, I'll suggest to explore 1vs1 strategy games like kahuna, checkers, chess, hex, hive, quoridor, pylos, gomoku, reversi, and so on.

Another thing that I find really useful when I'll approach a game I don't know: you can watch or rewatch games on the site, played by yourself or anyone else. Sometimes watching (or rewatching, maybe from other player's sides) games is the best way to learn them.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I STRONGLY agree with senatorhung.

I know, it's my fault if I don't understand a game and I should blame myself instead of the bad luck for losing... but it's the only game theorically not luck-driven I still not understand how to play between the ones I play on the site.
Depending on which cards you draw like the events and the military ones, IMHO sometimes you simply CAN'T stop your opponent strategy (it happened both to me and to me opponents, obviously).
And in a game like this my opinion is that it's involved an unfair amount of luck in too many phases of the game... its luck factor isn't the same of perudo or can't stop, but it's not so far away when each round you have at least 3 phases (the new cards entering the rows, the military cards you draw, and the events) in which you can only rely on luck, and 1 phase (the round itself) in which you have to choose what to do

I wonder because people who see this list might think "I like LC and 6nimmt, so looks like TTA is the right game for me" ;-). But well... you didn't sort by complexity, fine ^^.

But I think apart from game-mechanism-complexity the game is a lot about planning and calculating - more than about getting lucky with the cards.
