CONTEST: How many time jokers can be used at single game table

Post by tarongot »

Topic is a little for fun, but not 100%. It is to draw your attention to serious abuses of using time jokers, and as I discovered recently BUGGED time jokers.
So a contest is in 2 categories:

1. How many time jokers can be used total at single game table by all players - current winner 7.

2. How many time jokers can be used by single player at single game table - current winner 3.

If you want take part in this contest post your values.

And with little laugh think how serious that can be that someone can take your table hostage like that. When you're left with only two options: agree of being hostage, or quit and taking karma and ELO penalty for someone's else actions. For that someone can't meet the conditions they agreed to, and is abusing bugged feature, feature that was created for real emergency. Also don't count on BGA staff help with that matter, you are hostage and no one will help you.

PS: Why time jokers are bugged is explained in that bug report, that like any other's is ignored by BGA staff: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=242242

I'm not sure that's a bug. The time that occurs outside of your time window is not considered your time per see (although some places on the site will show your time left as your total time potentially remaining).

So when you add 4 days on your clock, this also naturally adds 4 days of "sleep" time.

You didn't propose what you want instead. Do you really only want them to fix the bug so that time jokers only add 4 calendar days time instead of 8 calendar days in a fast turn-based game? Or do you actually want them to add a shorter (but non-zero) time?

Or do want them completely disabled? When you say "people creating and joinig expect to go fast" and imply that using a joker does not "meet the conditions they agreed to," it sounds like what you really want is for jokers to be disabled at fast turn-based tables.

Allow me to direct your attention to this game with 12 jokers from one person.

I don't see need for a single time joker in this game, it is friendly mode. And I don't see how would be possible for a game 30 days old to use 12 TJ by single person? I suspect confusion somewhere.

And I'm not going too. For once I want BGA to give proposal to fix this, proposal how to deal with this or anything else for that matter.

So its not a bug when slow and medium games gets 4 days to think, that in those you can leave game for 4 days, and at same time fast games you can leave for 8 days? Ok. You can call it "faulty logic" or "wrong description" if you don't like word "bug".

A time joker extends thinking time by 96 hours, and fast-turn based games use 12h of thinking time per day, so I can see the logic behind a time joker extending a fast-turn-based game by 8 calendar days.

I'm not saying I agree with the implementation though.

How exactly would someone use 12 jokers in one game?

When you use a time joker, this naturally affects how much total time you have, otherwise what would be the point of using a joker? The description of the table still remains correct as far as how much time you can regain per turn.

I'm not sure what your solution would be either, because jokers by definition need to add you more time. If they didn't, then it's the jokers that would be badly advertized. People would be wondering why they still have only 12 hours to play after they used their joker.

It was a bug of some kind that was spotted in this thread.

I agree that is strange behaviour for a time joker to allow a player to be absent from a "fast turn based game" longer than a "slow turn based game". If a table is 1 or 2 moves a day players are expecting the game to last more than a week, a 4 day absence may be annoying but is less than 50% increase in the total time to compete the game.
A "24 moves a day" table is probably expecting the game to end in a day or two, and the time joker provides 8 days of absence, a 400% increase in the time needed to complete the game. I don't play fast turn based but it is obviously absurd that someone could start a fast turn based game to complete over the weekend and have someone use a time joker to push the game into next week.

Time jokers can't be used in real time games for obvious reasons, it seems reasonable to not allow them in any turn based game that has a "playing times" as the game is expected to be played fast enough that allowances need to be made for sleep.

This doesn't solve the issue that someone could use 4 time jokers in a game and delay it for 2 weeks. Personally I would prefer that Time jokers just prevent time penalties for the next 4 days, and the other players at the table can decide if they want to wait or eject the player that used the joker.

I think the fix for this issue is just to add only 2 days of thinking time to any fast turn-based games. That will be equivalent to 4 calendar days.

I'm against proposals to let others quit games without penalty once a time joker has been used. I understand that the players "did not sign up for that" when they joined the game, but I think the time jokers are a valuable part of the site. Sometimes things come up in life and you aren't available to play. It's limited to 4 a year (assuming no bugs) and people shouldn't have to worry about coming back to all the games they were winning in being quit and all the ones they were losing still going on.
