I think the link to BGG should be made more apparent. I mean, right now there's no way for anyone to even know it exists, unless they are familiar with BGG and they also know that you can filter by BGA games.

Certainly a useful thing to know and more people should be made aware of it, it shouldn't be something you have to dig in a forum to find out.

It's true that this site might not be the best place to rate games since this is a place to play, not to be a critic. With that said, this also means that we have countless replays of games that have been played, many of which being major games that have happened in important competitive contexts (given that bar some exceptions like Chess, BGA is the place where the competitive scene of most games happen).

So, it would be very useful to have the ability to comment and write reviews for specific instances of games.

Right now we can comment, but the format doesn't lend itself to very elaborate discussions, and it's certainly not intended for review-like writing, with ratings and all.

Along the same lines, I feel the ability to make personal lists is missing. For example, you could make a list of the top 100 games you've ever played for a particular game, or any other theme you want to make into a list. I've been wanting something like that for a long time.

It would also lead people to check out other people's games more. Right now, maybe people are aware of other players' achievements on some level, but they won't always go watch all the replays of the tournaments they won and things like that. And for the tournaments where they didn't even earn a medal, the chances are pretty low that anyone is gonna go rewatch those games. So, having lists would be a way for players to signal to other players which of the games they played they consider the best, so that other people can know what games they should go watch.

I suggest a rating system like in an App store. That would help a lot in deciding which games are worth learning.

Kind regards

Has our society gotten to the point where things like youtube and the app store are considered good critical tools?

Read a bunch of comments and note the intelligence level, or lack thereof, in the app store (Apple at least, I assume Android is similar) and you might change your statement.

BGG ratings lately are declining (or maybe always sucked and I didn't notice it). I often see people being critical in the comments and then rating it highly, or vice versa. And also people openly stating that they rated highly or lowly to balance things, or for politics, or whatever agenda they have. So who knows how many, not so openly stated, are doing the same thing.

Plus as I and many have stated, it's subjective anyway, so only good if you are trying to find what the masses rate well, not necessarily what you would enjoy.

In terms of popularity, my most played games are short games like Can't Stop or Lucky Numbers. Games I can play in 2-5 minutes live or which don't require a lot of thought or planning, so they work good for quick 10-30 seconds at a time with turn-based.
So if popularity is based on number of games played, some short games would be over-ranked.

That's a good point. Playing a game more (whether that's in number of games or in time spent) doesn't necessarily mean we like that game more.

Yes there are plenty of quality ratings for movies but when you go to a cinema, they don't usually have reviews for all the movies they're currently showing available in the lobby where you buy your movie ticket & popcorn. It's normal to have to seek out this information elsewhere if you care about other people's rating of a movie/etc.

Any game on here that has a BGG page, has a link to its BGG page on its game page here. It's really quite easy to check what other people think of it, if you care about that.
I agree with this. While people may not be aware of BGG, there is the link in BGA to it, and I think that's sufficient really. If I'm looking to buy a board game, I have to go looking for reviews on it (if I care about what it's like before I buy) and even if I don't notice the link to BGG (which are often also on store pages), a quick google would turn it up before long. Plus there's links to videos so you can get an idea of how a game plays, which is probably a better indicator as to whether you would like a game than the ratings of the masses. Not that ratings aren't helpful - I do use BGG's ratings as a starting point - if a game has 5 or lower, I'm probably not going to buy it, but 7 or higher is generally a good sign. But then again, Twilight Imperium is rated 8.6, and it's not at all my kind of game, so it really is just a starting point. I get why that game has that rating though - I certainly wouldn't say it's bad, just not for me.
SquireKeladry wrote: ↑08 October 2026, 13:35 If you're not aware, you can also use BGG to sort all the games on BGA by BGG ranking, number of ratings or highest average rating. And BGG's game pages also link back to the game on here. So I really don't think BGA needs to go to the trouble of duplicating information that is easily available on BGG. Maybe BGA could make it a bit more obvious that there is great integration with BGG for anyone who cares about ratings and reviews but duplicating BGG's info just for people who are too lazy to click a few links would be a big waste of effort imo.

Here you go - a list of games on BGA sorted by their ranking on BGG. To get back to BGA, you can just go to the web links section of whichever individual game you decide you want to try next and find the link for BGA.

Nice. I certainly don't really need this, but it's helpful for people who might be interested in that kind of ranking.
SquireKeladry wrote: ↑08 October 2026, 13:35 Something that I think would be really useful is the ability to tag a game with "not interested" (don't suggest it to me again). Having the option to do this would be much more helpful to me than BGA assigning quality ratings to games or even getting the section mentioned above back. If you'd like this too, support this suggestion: https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=19867
OMG, yes. Couldn't agree more with this suggestion.
